hi

as the Arduino eagle files aren't currently released, and there are some who would probably like to have them, I have drawn them up and posted them here. There is just a schematic there now, but it  is 100% compatible with the current Arduino hardware, namely the Diecimila. If you design a PCB variant, post here or message me and I'll link to it. I'll release a through-hole PCB version when I get a chance.

Also, as there are many questions without answers about who can use the "Arduino" name, I invented a name that anyone is free to use... Freeduino. After you finish reading this sentence you are hereby granted an unofficial license to make things called Freeduino. You have to read the whole sentence though. If you have read this far you are already a licensed Freeduino maker! Congratulations. smiley

I drew the schematics from the Arduino Reference design, which is released under CC 2.5. You can use this design for any use you like, as long as you maintain the original CC 2.5 license conditions that the design came from.

Daniel, I already have a through-hole PCB design compatible with Diecimila.  I will send you the eagle files.

well that was fast. I thought it would take at least an hour for someone to do the PCB design.   smiley

I would like to clarify that my PCB design uses the FT232BL and has the same Arduino physical layout.

I realized Freeduino uses the FT232RL.  Is Freeduino keeping the same Arduino physical layout or not?  Any ideas for a new layout?

Hey

Freeduino at the moment is just a design. It's a way to avoid the trademark and file issues associated with Arduino: to experiment with open hardware variants without infringing on the Arduino project. So it's whatever you want it to be smiley I was just thinking it would be good to have a Diecimila compatible board for those who want to make their own... if people want o make PCB's from the schematic, I'm happy to post them and get them out there.

There's no board design for Freeduino yet.. but how about this temporary logo? smiley

Hi Daniel!

Great work with the schematic!
Have you allready checked the component packages you choosed? If so, I would mention this on the website.

But, regarding the logo... hm.... I think it's not that nice ;-)

hey John that is much nicer!

@oli, I haven't done much with the schematic, but will have a through-hole version in a week or two! the packages right now are correct for 0603 surface mount components.

hi

I just posted a newer version of Freeduino, this time with a board file using 0603 SMT parts. The only thing left to do is to route the board. If anyone wants to have a look at it and suggest corrections, feel free.... routing this one and designing a through-hole version is next.

Freeduino is now electrically and physically equivalent to Diecimiliatm, the only difference being that Freeduinotm uses 0603's instead of 0402's, and of course the name.

Strongly opinionated, but not official!

You have one side of the fuse connected to GND...

Is that placement copied from the real board, and is it really what you want?
I got it to autroute ok after hand-routing around the ftdi chip, but it's not very pretty (60+ vias, for instance.)

Sweet, btw, you can probably relocate the statement "carries no warranty" to a TOS/TAC page. It's nice that you point it out but with anything 'free' generally people don't expect warranty's.

Are you going to scope a bt or ethernet version of the freeduino?

Also, on your site sub page it's useful if the logo is clickable and links back to your home page. It'll also assist google with indexing, and the homepage PR which is a formula including the weight of any sub-pages linking back to the homepage, like a distributed sum-of-all-parts kinda algorithm, every back-link to the homepage helps.

hey

I fixed the fuse issue. I'm not so worried about Google right now; the PCB page and the Index of Arduino Knowledge page get over 100 unique visitors a day, and they've only been up a few weeks.

The purpose of these files is just to get files for a compatible design out there, so if you want to make an Ethernet one, sure smiley
