For reference, I checked advertising rates in Circuit Cellar Inc (a high tech prohobbyist magazine, where Sparkfun regularly advertises.) An advertisement in there runs about $3000 (full page, full color, w quantity discount for being in every issue for a year.) So that makes a $100k giveaway pretty substantial, but not really outrageous (probably similar to last years total print advertising budget?)

From the latest news update on the sparkfun page (that finally loaded for me): EDIT FROM FRENCIL:
Wow!
Our site has been up and down today from the unprecedented load we're seeing. We're tuning our entire site, top to bottom and inside and out to handle this torrent. We're also shaving off a few features of the website (temporarily) to make everything faster, such as rating comments. After Free Day has passed we'll re-enable everything we've disabled to weather the storm.
Feel free to join the conversation on our public irc channel: irc.freenode.net #sparkfun

Some contest huh? Can't even log on. All that bragging about their new hardware servers. Oh well they meant well but I think their mouth wrote a check their server couldn't cash.

There are about 2000 people in the sparkfun irc channel. I'd expect not to be able to get any orders through for a good portion of the day. wtb caching/load balancing
