Admittedly I'm new to the world of stepper motors, but I've done a little research and I need to ask this question:

If I can run a stepper motor with a simple h-bridge chip like the SN754410NE, which can be purchased for around $3.50, what is the advantage of buying a whole stepper motor controller for at least $12.50?

I suspect one advantage is that the controller can do microstepping.  Anything else?

One thing that I can think of, is that many stepper controllers act as constant current supplies, so that you don't have to wait quite as long for the magnetic field to build up after you make a step.  This gives you more torque at higher running speeds.
