Now that is an awesome idea! Log the knocks on the door and make them visible on your web interface. You could probably get it to send you an email when there is a knock as well. I love it.

That's a good idea. The other idea I have been kicking around is to put a doorbell button next to my door and have a solenoid on the inside of the door that would create a knocking sound when the button is pressed.

For the sake of bumping and old thread:
I was thinking about doing something very much like this except that I was also thinking of having the Arduino control a solenoid or servo to open the door lock. This way, say someone I know calls me and says they need to get something out of my office, I could tell them to knock 5 times (or whatever) and then send a message to the Arduino telling it to watch a piezo for a certain number of knocks. The beauty of this is that if someone else tried knocking 5 times, the screen would display something like "ACCESS DENIED!" since the number (or pattern) of the knocks would be a one-time-use combination that could be randomly generated by a script called by me any time someone calls asking to get into the office. A keypad could work just as well, but it wouldn't look as nice, and what would be the fun in that anyway?

If a knock trigered an email, you would have to put some kind of limit, like it wont send another email for 5 minutes, or something like that. Or else... "DING.....You have 958 new messages"

"DING.....You have 958 new messages" I'm thinking more along the lines of, say someone needs physical access to my office, they could call or email me directly. I would then send an email to an address accessible by the Arduino telling it that I want to activate the door opening mode. The program would then send back to me a combination which I would then give to the person so that they can enter the combination and the door will open, but the combination would work only that one time. This could be done with a keypad, but I think it would be neater if it could detect a pattern being knocked on the door.
