Bigger Bigger Smaller Smaller Reset Reset

I have a new Arduino UNO R3 that I'm trying to work with and I can't get a single sketch to upload.  I followed the installation guide (I'm running win7 x64).  When updating the drivers everything worked fine.  I can see the listing for the arduino in device manager as "Arduino UNO R3 (COM3)".

In the IDE my device is set at Arduino UNO and my COM port is set to 3.  The green power light is on on the board and the orange LED is blinking.  If I hit the upload button (for the blink example) I get:
avrdude: ser_send(): write error: sorry no info avail

If I hold down shift while clicking upload (like the troubleshooting guide says to do), I get:
avrdude: usbdev_open(): did not find any USB device "usb"

Running the IDE as administrator doesn't make a difference.  Any ideas?  This is really frustrating.

I enabled verbose output on upload and this is what I got....it looks like some communication with the device is happening....

Bigger Bigger Smaller Smaller Reset Reset

Another update - I found and tried a 3rd USB cable and that one seems to have everything working.  No idea why the other 2 don't work.

Bigger Bigger Smaller Smaller Reset Reset

Thanks for your post. It helped me out quite a bit. I was having the same problem after everything had been working well for a few days. All of a sudden I started getting the write errors you reported and could not load any sketches. After hours I was about to call the board dead. This doesn't seem to be an uncommon problem but I have yet to find any definitive answer on the web.

Based on you changing out cables I decided (because I don't happen to have any extra cables) to move to a different USB port. I moved from the one that had been working the past few days until the write error and so far everything is working good in the new USB port. I have one more port on the front and 5 on the back so after 7 more write errors I guess I need a new computer.   smiley-grin

I thought for sure my Uno was dead. Can't imagine where the real problem is.

I forgot to mention, the loopback test in the first post of this forum worked with no problems.
