I am looking to use the EthernetDNS library to look up a specific server every time and get its IP without any user interaction.  the current code that requires me to type in the hostname into the serial monitor is as follows.  I tried just defining the hostname as my address but that didn't work.

Is your machine a DNS server? I didn't think so. Setting your machine as the dnsServerIp was the wrong thing to change.

The value in hostName is what is read from the Serial port. It is that value that you want to hardcode.

I think the arduino IDE 1.0 now includes DNS in its ethernet library, which you may want to check out.

I am going to use the DHCP library to get the DNS server address, but the data that comes in on the serial read is what I want to hard code. So yes.

I had a look at the new IDE but decided I can't use it as I am planning on integrating this into a system I have already written, this would require rewriting the whole thing as I used a lot in terms of the ethernet libraries.
