Is it possible to design a device to use existing software?
I don't know how these things work, but I am hoping to get a bit of insight.

this is the sofware:

I am wondering if an Arduino is the right direction to start looking for optical touch-screen solution.

thinking of two small cameras controlled by arduino feeding into the software available.

No, unless the device is exactly the same design as the original one.

You are being lazy here and not wanting to learn anything. This won't endear you to people on this forum.

I just learned that you are grumpy! How is that for fast learner.

This is a forum, and the section for hacking. I know what I want to do, but I am not sure what direction it will take. I have never used an arduino and they frankly don't interest me all that much. I just wanted to know if I can use it for what I need.

Well it is a pity you didn't say what is was in your first post.

So now you know.
In fact no board but the original one can do what you ask.
