I tried to find some project on google where it was used, but was not sure what to search for so it was just like "arduino led message display" and such, but found nothing.

Anyone here aware of any projects with it?

If none did it before, I guess the easiest would be to just record the IR codes, and then send it to the sign, but I would prefer a faster wired option.

I have actually owned one of those before, very fun. Anyway as you have correctly pointed out the IR codes would be the easiest.

However inside you could use the arduino to replace it's microcontroller, though you would have to figure out what each of the pins did and how it operates.

You could always just salvage the LED matrix and any other key components LED driver etc and just put together the solution yourself inside the case?

Yes, but that is a bit more than I planned to do. The idea was to connect it to my living room ambient light controller (which is connected to ethernet), and then use that to control the display. The problem there is that I am running out of pins soon since it is only an arduino nano.

I would definately go with the LED matrix panel from Sure Electronics. It uses standard LED matrixes for a 32x8 resolution, and you can chain boards together. It contains the whole controller board, all you need to do is send it data from the Arduino - only 3 pins needed! Best part is that they're about $10 each (includes the 32x8 matrix and controller board pre-soldered)
(you can buy them here: http://www.sureelectronics.net/goods.php?id=1118, and other colors/types: http://www.sureelectronics.net/category.php?id=60. I am not sure about the non-32x8 ones, but you can search for an Arduino tutorial)

Very interesting modules too! Only problem with them is that they are not in a case, and I need that for what I want to do. Think I will buy the display from eBay, and then see if I can hack it... if not, I will have to do IR on it...
