Basically I need help starting my new project

Mini Elevator
-motorized
-3 floors
-able to go to any floor by control

Questions
How should I go about starting this project?
Circuitry? How will I know what components will I be needing for this project?
Programming? How should I go about coding the program.

Thanks for the help in advance, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

You should probably start your project off with a building permit and an elevator shaft  XD

bigluc

What exactly are you trying to build?

without further information i'd suggest you do the following;

look at how real elevators work and think how you could scale down the mechanism/s
get an arduino and learn the basics
play with stepper motors (to get precise positioning) and microswitches (to detect when something has arrived somewhere)
think about belt drives maybe
get some clear ideas which will lead to clear questions and ask again

have fun

i did something similar for a school project on another platform.

i used photodiodes to find the amount of light currently at each platform. then i used 3 buttons to go to each level. when a button was pressed, the top button for ex, the motor would turn and bring the platform up until the top light sensor value was higher than a certain level (covered by platform) and then stop the motor.  the platform was mounted on a loop of tank tread like track. boolean values were used to track current level of the platform

you could use sonar, limit switches, encoders(to go to a precise level), or many other sensors instead of photdiodes.

let me know if you need help with code.

what scale is this "elevator" on?

sirbow2

its about 3 feet tall, if i understand what you mean by scale...

Im assuming this elevator is some sort of school project.

The way i would make a rudimentary elevator is with switches.

1 for each floor.
1 on top to mechanically cut the motor power if it gets to high
1 on bottom to stop it from going to low (unwinding its cable).

Also the floor switches need to be rigged in such a fashion that its triggered when the cart is center on the switch. Else it will stop at different places going up and down.
The switches may be mechanical in the form of buttons or electrical in the form of metal detectors or light detectors. either should do just fine.

A motor shield could be used to control the motor driving the cart.
So i won't go too much into that.

Programing wise you would need to know 3 things
Where the cart is.
Where the cart is going
What direction is that?

You know what buttons is where so you can easily assign values to the inputs.
Likewise for the target value

Simple math tells you what direction you need to go.
Direction = Target - Current
Ex:
Target = 3
Current = 2
Direction would then be 1. Positive numbers mean up and negative numbers mean down.

Hope this helps to give you some initial ideas.
