The MKR1000 comes with its pins stuck into some black anti-static foam, which is conductive. You need to remove this foam before you can use the MKR1000.
Make sure the USB cable is fully plugged into the MKR1000 and your computer.
Try using a different USB cable. You might have a damaged, defective, or charge-only USB cable.
