I've soldered a small switch to my Wemos D1 Mini Pro so I can easily switch between the integrated antenna and an external antenna. Not sure how good or bad it is yet as I'm still waiting for the antenna's to be delivered.

Effectively, you destroyed the WiFi-signal integrity for both external and built-in antenna now.

Possibly, but its working, and working quite well I may add. No noticeable loss of range using the internal antenna. Still waiting for delivery of the external antenna's so not been able to test that side of it yet ..

Good for you! Great to see someone willing to experiment. Why wait for an antenna to arrive. Find one on a junk router or make one from a short length of copper wire. 1/4 wave at 2.4 GHz is not very long.
