Can I connect android phone to arduino using usb? If it can be done how am I supposed to connect them together? My phone doesn't have a big usb port. It only has a small one. I am talking about usb serial btw.

Yes.It is possible with USB shield.You can control the arduino from android.For example you can switch a LED.
You can use an "USB OTG" cable. Just a few bucks on ebay and works perfect.

I use a hundred dollar phone and I don't think my phone supports usb otg!
Download, install & run "USB Host Diagnostics" from Google Play Store. This will tell you if OTG works on your phone.

I checked my phone doesn't support USB OTG. That doesn't come as a surprise to me though.
