Mellis DIY Cellphone = Testing Antenna Connectivity / GSM Debugging - Help

So I'm a real newby. This is my first arduino related project. I have built radios / transmitters in the past.

I've built Mellis' DIY Cellphone, done the bootloader and uploaded my sketch. Everything seems dead on.

The phone uses the M10 GSM
I've charged the battery.
LED's light up with the word 'Connect'

I have not been able to connect to my network

Here's what David suggests and what I have been able to do.

Can't connect to the network.

  • Is there a SIM card in the socket? Yes
  • Is the SIM socket soldered correctly? The 22 ohm resistors? Yes The corresponding pads on the GSM module? not really sure which these are, but all GSM solders look good
  • Is the antenna soldered correctly? Yes The corresponding pad on the GSM module? again, not really sure which this is, but all GSM solders look good
  • Is the 0 ohm resistor soldered correctly (to the trace connecting the M10 GSM module to the antenna)? Yes
  • Do you have reception? with any other phone in proximity I have full bars so I'm guessing this is yes. Is there some way the phone lets you know as you are in connect mode?
  • Is the SIM card locked to another phone? Nope
  • AT&T (and possibly other carriers): have you activated your SIM card and phone on AT&T's website? You'll need the IMEI number printed on the M10 GSM module. Yes

Question:
Where should I be probing to test the antenna connection?
Is there something on the board that lets one know reception during connect mode??

GSM debugging:

Mellis says one can also debug the shield. Here's his instructions:

Serial Debugging

You can further debug the phone by communicating with the GSM module via serial communication with the computer, using the microcontroller as a proxy. To do so, upload the SerialProxy sketch to the phone (using a 3.3V FTDI cable or breakout board). Then open the serial monitor and set the baud rate to 9600 and the line ending to "carriage return". After a few seconds, you should see:

READY
AT
OK

That means the GSM is ready to receive AT commands (text strings that mostly start with the letters "AT"). The commands are detailed in the datasheet for the GSM module but here are a few basic ones:

Question:
When I open my serial monitor I get 'ready'Typing in 'AT' gives no result. What should I do?

The LED near the GSM module (LED2) should be on, indicating that the GSM module is on. (It should blink off briefly when it's reset from the program running on the microcontroller.)

What do you see in the serial monitor with the main Cellphone sketch uploaded?

Sometimes it takes a while to connect, especially (it seems) the first time. Try uploading the main cellphone sketch and leave the phone for a few minutes. Press the reset button and leave it again. Etc.

Uploading Cellphone sketch:
Hit reset. Left phone for 30 minutes.(3x)
No LED2 light at all.
LED readout: CONNECT
Serial monitor (carriage return/9600 baud) reads: AT%13%.

Uploading Serial Proxy sketch:
No LED2 light at all.
Serial monitor (carriage return/9600 baud) reads: READY.
typing AT results in nothing

Uploading Serial Proxy sketch:
No LED2 light at all.
Serial monitor (carriage return/9600 baud) reads: Initializing GSM module . . .

Could I have fried my GSM?
I have a voltmeter. is there anything I can check?

It sounds like the GSM module isn't turning on. You probably didn't fry it (or, at least, that's not the hypothesis I'd start with). Try checking the solder joints on the GSM module and the microcontroller. I annotated the relevant pins on the image here: DIY Cellphone (LED matrix variant) | David Mellis | Flickr

In particular, pwrkey lets the microcontroller turn the GSM module on and off. TX1 and RX1 are used for communication between the microcontroller and the GSM module. And, of course, the GSM module needs power and ground.

Make sure the pins of the component are actually soldered to the board but also that they're not shorted to the pins next to them (except for when there are multiple of the same pin next to each other, as with ground and power).

Checked pins. They are all good. Hit them again with the iron, just to be sure.

Still no power to LED2.

Still hanging on Connect.

Serial Monitor still reading AT%13%

getting power readings at the ground and power pins on the GSM

You checked the soldering on LED2, too, right?

Do you the pwrkey line change voltage when you reset the microcontroller (with the reset button)? It's a slow pulse, I think, so you should be able to see it with a multimeter.

Yeah, LED2 is soldered tight.

On the GSM module Voltage drops and restores upon Reset
pwrkey (2nd pin on SIM side of GSM) - red
ground (black pin of battery) - black

On the microcontroller: Voltage drops and restores upon Reset
pwrkey (11th pin on SIM side of microcontroller) - red
ground (black pin of battery) - black

what i did notice is it seems like voltage is at 4v. until I put the probes on. I hit reset and the voltage drops then returns at about .5v. f i hit reset it continues to rest to .5v unless I take the probes away.

Hmm... the pwrkey line stays low for about 12 seconds (after you press the reset button), right?

If so, sounds like there's a problem with either:

Thanks, so much for your help, David.

Checked everything against your image. And everything around the GSM +Microcontroller checks out fine.

Yes, the pwrkey, powers down for 12 seconds then back up.

Did a bit more probing. No power to:
LED2
470 resistor next to LED2
the three 22 resistors
antenna line (GSMpin > 0 resitor jump > antneova)

Are these on the same powerline? is there a schematic that I can check against?

Good news! ordered a new GSM chip and now my LED2 lights up and I'm getting serial activity!
