then it all goes deathly quiet

Just to set your expectations: "tracing" is unlikely to uncover any more information than you already have.
I try to only provide test results until payment is received the first time working with someone, having had the same thing happen a time or two (the delayed payment part - have only been partially stiffed a couple times, never totally blown off tho).
An other way is making agreements with milestones. It also makes it easier to estimate times and costs
