An ESP is an alternative to an Arduino. Once you have an ESP, you have something much more capable than an Arduino. The apparent advantage of an Arduino is that you have more I/O, but this is easily added to the ESP using expander boards.

By the way - note the little 1 mF capacitor on the illustration above. This allows a relatively lightweight 3.3 V regulator to power the ESP during its transmitting pulses.
