Gears for Stepper Motor Shafts

Hi,

I am new to mechanics, and have bought the following stepper from digikey:

The shaft is 1.5mm in diameter, and I would like to place a gear on the shaft. Can someone point me where I can buy gears that I can press fit or attach in some manner to a shaft of this size. I am not overly concerned with the number of teeth as I will be adding other gears to get the right step that I am looking for.

Thank you,
HB

I found a great place for gears that's got exactly what you're looking for. Here's a link to their page. They have one of the best menu driven selection processes I've seen at online stores. You just select by your shaft diameter (1.5mm) and whatever other parameter you need and you'll end up with the exact thing you want. Quick delivery to. They helped me out on my project and I'll definitely use them again.

That's the page to select the type of gear you want, not the home page. You'll probably want one of the top two categories, most likely 'gears' but you might want to look at 'timing belts, pulleys, sprockets and chain drives' as well. Anyway, they've probably got what you want.

Thank you so much for that link! I've been searching high and low for a site like that.

One follow up question. Is there some sort of adhesive that people use to make sure the gear doesn't slip on the shaft, or is the set screw preferred? In my case the shaft is only 1.5mm so a set screw seems hard to find.

When you order the gear it comes with the set screw. But beware ! It's the hex wrench you'll need to tighten it up that'shard to find. I needed a 0.9mm hex wrench and it needed to be exact. Got it from McMaster/Carr where I have an account already. With the small size of the hex wrench you'll need you'd be well advised to make certain you get one that isn't just close but rather spot on...

Not sure what size you'll need for the 1.5mm diameter bore gear you need but it may be the same...

That's a great vendor to have a link to - thanks for posting it.

One thing I noticed though (and I've seen this at other places supplying gears): Why is it that you can't seem to buy a "compound" gear; that is, a spur gear with a "hub" that is a smaller (pinion) gear (metal or plastic)? It seems you can get spur gears of all sorts, and you can get pinion gears, but you can't buy both as a single gear. Yet, many mechanical products out there have such parts included.

For instance - I had a surplus Pittman gearmotor (paid $10.00 for) that I busted one of the internal "compound" gears via an "overdrive" situation; I contacted the company that currently manufactures the brand, and they would only sell me such a gear for $7.00 - but I had to buy 50 pieces! I said no-thank-you to that, but where could I get such a gear in the future (in the end, I swapped the gear for another from a different Pittman motor I had)?
