Thanks to all for the suggestions...
I'll buy an Uno or possibly a Mega and find a value for money component pack to get me started.
The rest I'll collect slowly from parts as suggested, infact am already going through faulty hardware before throwing them away.
Its a good thing I work in an IT Department
