Thanks Adilson, that info is much appreciated.
I think I will have a look at the waveform on the RS232 Tx line with my scope just to see what it looks like, perhaps there is something else affecting the serial data.
I will also try it with the com port set to 19200.
I don't think its the firewall because it sometimes works.
