LCD learning

I took apart a simple kitchen timer to learn how it worked and most of it makes sense but I have 1 question. The LCD in the picture seems to only have had a very thin piece of foam connecting it to the pins that drove the LCD. Is there somewhere or someone that can explain how that connection works? I would very much like to reuse the LCD and clock in other arduino projects but understanding how to drive the LCD which seems to use a "magic foam" connector which is what it looks like to my ignorance kind of limits me.

Hi.

See the black stripes in what you call foam ?
It's a bit like a zebra, so someone called that rubbery stuff zebrastrips.
Google will help you with that.

The actual name is "elastomeric connectors", and they are a good solution to create connections between PCB and the glass of the display.
