After hours of searching, I have not been able to find how to get the Adafruit MPR121 sensor shield for the Arduino Uno to detect proximity. I believe there is a way to enable this, but cannot figure it out.

This documentation says that it has proximity detection: http://cache.freescale.com/files/sensors/doc/app_note/AN3893.pdf
I just cannot figure out how it needs to be done.
