I am getting into electronics again!
So I am watching this video here: Gameboy Color inside a TI 83 Calculator [Tutorial] - YouTube

And I am wondering why he attached cables to the button pads? I thought there is a pressure pad over the button, and that when there is pressure on the button pad it completes the circuit.

Can anyone give me some detail on how this works?
