100v ammeter - Lower voltage requirement?

I purchased a 100-300v 50a ammeter off eBay for use in a project to simply measure how many amps are being drawn by certain things connected.
What I didn't realise is that it requires a minimum input voltage of 100v before it will work...obviously this is a bit excessive for my arduino project and thus renders the meter useless.

Does anyone know if there would be a way to strip off some of the components from the meter and use it to accept a lower voltage so I can use it to have either a 5v or 12v input and display the readings from that?
I can provide pictures of the meter in question or you can simply google for 'DDH-303L' and see it for yourself (white version with volts on top and amps on the bottom)

Thanks,

Phil
