Super excited to have gotten my arduino engineering kit in the mail today. I seem to be stuck trying to determine what could be wrong with the desktop IDE. I am trying to run the example code blink, but I am getting this error
fork/exec C:\Users\Justin\Documents\ArduinoData\packages\arduino\tools\arm-none-eabi-gcc\4.8.3-2014q1/bin/arm-none-eabi-g++.exe: An error in a system binary was detected. Try refreshing the PC to fix the problem.
Error compiling for board Arduino/Genuino MKR1000.
However, I am able to run the blink example program from the web IDE. I can't seem to find a post where someone else is having the same issue using the desktop IDE.
I am running windows 10, I have the board selected in the desktop IDE, and Its showing up in tools>ports>com6. I am not sure what other information you might need that I haven't included.
If anyone runs into this error, when you are downloading the software at https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software download the zip file, do not use the windows app installation method. I ended up trying this method, I downloaded the zip file, unzipped it and inside the folder ran the application. This time it worked without a hiccup, I was able to upload the blink example file. For some reason the windows app version is not working on my computer. Hopefully this will help someone in the future.
I suspect the problem was with the installation of Arduino SAMD Boards, not the IDE. Reinstalling Arduino SAMD Boards would likely solve the problem. The standard Arduino IDE stores hardware packages in a separate location so this forced you to reinstall Arduino SAMD Boards in addition to changing the IDE.
However, I think it was a good move for you to switch to the standard IDE over whatever that weird Windows App thing is anyway so you made a good move.
