After procrastinating for a while, I finally took the plunge and drew up a circuit board in some very easy to use CAD software that I found called Robot Room, Copper Connection

and then tried my hand at a bit of home PCB manufacture by toner transfer method. I am really pleased with the result. My Max7219 8 LED driver board went from this -
