I have managed to have this trouble as well. I did it by creating a ground loop through the USB connector and it fried the board. It was fried enough that half of the comm peripherals wouldn't work and the processor would get flaming hot eventually. When it got hot enough it would cease to work until it cooled. This sounds like basically what you're experiencing. I'm afraid your board is probably irreversibly dead.
