Title: PDF of book that comes with the Arduino starter kit
Post by: ambi on Oct 09, 2013, 10:30 pm
Hi,

Our University has purchased 60 starter kits and I have just started using it in classroom to teach programming. The book that comes with the kit is very useful. The link for this kit is http://arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoStarterKit

Does anyone know if this book is available in electronic form either under creative commons or for purchase? This will immensely help us in classroom. Also is the code for projects mentioned in book available for download?

The videos for the book have now been released under creative commons, so I am guessing the book will be available as well.
http://blog.arduino.cc/2013/07/30/arduino-starter-kit-video-tutorials/

Thanks,
Ambi.

+1 . I would also like to be able to read the book digitally ( as a paying customer that is )

I would be very careful to use that book in higher education. There are far to many errors in it to be useful for that purpose. Especially as the errors are on basic physics and electronic theory.
I would be happy to help out with correcting it, but it is not in public domain so it is hard to do.

Why don't start to share the mistakes on this forum ?

Why don't start to share the mistakes on this forum ?

The most obvious one is on page 30, where Ohms law is misused. They totally neglect the voltage-drop over the LED, which at this voltage levels is a big error. The calculations are thus wrong, and the conclusions in error.

The text also uses non-standard terminology, such as "the amperage used by the LED", which is at best strange and at worst wrong. All through Project 01 the concepts of voltage, current, power and energy are mixed up. The definitions of current and voltage on page 21 are wrong. The explanation of a resistor on page 25 and how it affects the light from a LED is wrong.

In addition there are lots of smaller things, such as that sensors convert energy into electrical energy, which very few of the sensors we use today actually does.  And that a piezo element vibrates when it "receives electricity", which sounds like an explanation from the 18th century.

There are also a number of strange definitions in the Glossary.

hello... I just plain cannot read the book due to the color of the text.  I must use a magnifying glass which is quite cumbersome.  Has anyone found a free downlaod (since I've already paid for the book within the kit).   Old people need love (and darker text) too!  :-)  Thanks!

One of my pet peeves is textbooks with errors in them. I'm less concerned by typos than I am by statements that are just wrong.

And there are far too many out there like that. Sad to hear that the project book for the official Arduino Starter Kit is yet another.

Hear, hear!  - I feel exactly the same... and I don't consider myself all that old. It's like the author only considered young eyes would need to read it. And the colours! Coding and doing something new with your kit doesn't need to be blinged-up with odd-coloured pages or Tiny, grey text - PLEASE, Arduino, PLEASE! produce a PDF copy and/or a PDF plain text (min 12-point text), version.

I blame Wired magazine for the whole "black text on dark blue" and "light grey text on medium red" thing. I see a lot of websites that are difficult to read.

I don't want color behind text. Just make it black text on white! I don't need style to obscure the information.

I was sad to read about how the Arduino project book is riddled with errors. I recently got the complete kit and I'm now afraid to read it knowing there's errors. Would anyone happen to have any other book recommendations for the complete newb to all things arduino and programming?

I should mention that my interests lie specifically in dynamic LED lighting.

I think it's disgraceful that the book should be printed so badly - small faint type, hardly legible. I received my kit today but am very disappointed because I can hardly read the instructions.
Why doesn't someone in charge reply to these complaints and tell us where we can download the book?

Would like a digital version as well. Dividing my attention between the board, the hard-to-keep-open book and the board was annoying. If I could have just had it on my screen next to the IDE I would have been much happier.

Well this is just great, the book has errors and I find out after I buy it.
This is why Im getting confused with this stuff. I want to learn about electronics but get a crapy bok. Its a good things there no pdf. First they should fix it. Open source, yeah right. All about saving money

Can anyone recommend a good simple beginner book I can learn all I need to about the basics and maybe a bit more.
Thanks

About the basics of what? Programming or electronics?

And which country are you in? That may affect what people suggest.

(And you might want to post the question in Bar Sport, more people read that!)

will do thanks

As for the book recommendations, I was hoping for something about electronics, in the UK although I can import books too.
Thanks

Try 'Mastering Electronics', written by John Watson, published by MacMillan / Palgrave. You can pick up a second hand copy cheaply on the used book web sites, personally I use www.abebooks.co.uk (http://www.abebooks.co.uk) but obviously there are others.

I have the book too, and the reason (obvious) that the authors picked such a color for printing tells me they did not want peope to copy freely and distribute. Gray and light colors do not scan too well.

The book is the 'value' in the kit. If they released it as a pdf people wouldn't need to buy anything from Arduino, and don't forget that sales of official items pay for this web site.

Errors: in the printed manual, Fig 2, p22 is totally wrong regarding electric current, which is fundamental.  It should read, something equivalent to, Current at 1 = current at 4.  Current at 2 plus the current at 3 = current at 1 = current at 4.

What is actually written is nonsensical and completely misleading.

Brilliant kit and project though.  Hard to reprint a hard book, but they could insert a leaf as an erratum at low cost.

Hi,
I was thinking of purchasing one of the starter kits from my local maplin here in england,
However reading about the starter book having these errors is worrysome.
I'm a firm believer in good knowledge can be gleaned from a book,
But with potential errors for someone like me who is new to arduino could be troublesome, especially if you cannot complete the said tutorials due to some printing errors.

Maybe a pdf could resolve this issue, "But" i have also seen PDF's with these errors too,
So it is like a catch 22, you'r damned if you do, and you'r damned if you dont.

Still i will get the kits and probably the book too as i need to learn Arduino for some projects i would like to get rolling.
Cheers

I got the kit & book too, great package. One problem: it is very frustrating having to take the book in hand to read and then type the code or to verify some circuitry. The book binding doesn't let it stay open so i can't put it on the table as it will close on its own. Please have some decency and make the book downloadable. Thank you.

It may be too late but I've copied some projects of the "starter kit" book in English and translated them in French here (with even some fix and add-on) : http://astenor.free.fr/Arduino (http://astenor.free.fr/Arduino)

Projects 9 to 15 are done.
I propose them under Word and PDF format, in English and French.

I hope this can help.

I'll be glad to have some feedback about mistakes. Some are fixed and highlighted in yellow in a 2nd document when I detected mistakes).

You can join me on Tweeter @Astenor, or send me a reply here.

FYI   I just bought a new laptop and had to update all my files and apps. Updated to Arduino 1.6.8. Surprise to see a new section in the Examples item #10 StarterKit_Basickit. All the programs are written for you.

I can't understand, If the video were released under CC licence why the Starter kit book wasn't?
Maybe they could release it and it's source formatting code (if it's written using LaTeX or something similar) under a public repository with a free and open licence, so everybody can correct errors and improve it.

It would be a great advantage for us and for the company too, because they could include a new version of the book with the starter kit.

However they should include with the starter kit a code to download a pdf/mobi/epub version of the book, IMHO.

We [1] have just purchased twelve Genuino Starter Kits, which we want to use in educational courses for kids here in Herakilon, Greece and the version that we received has been released under CC-By-SA. [see attached image]

I would like to help building a platform for educational material released under CC-By-SA in various languages.

Any ideas where to start?
Thanks for any pointers or any help in finding digital (translatable) material or maybe even a ready platform (maybe wiki)!

Cheers,
Jann

Hi,

my pupils just found a bug in the code of the Project 12 in this book.
On the page 131 in the book there is a code.
After the line 49 they inserted the following code:
Quote
numberOfKnock = 0;
Only this way works the Knock Lock project properly.

Thank you, Mariano! I have all the lights on, and my bi-focal glasses too (granted, they're an expired prescription, because I subsist on my entitlement) and I still can't read that tiny grey text without giving myself a migraine. Such a blessing to be able to peruse it, now, on my 36"

(I must agree, it really ought to be on a Wiki where the smarter ones amongst you can be correcting it's errors, and it can format itself to *my* environment, rather than the other way around.

I guess its part og the job to figure out where the errors are, and what functions. Elektricity is party a personal interpretation and partly universal laws. Its like learning to swim.

Got the kit and book some days ago. And it has no big errors . Works fine . No worries .

JP - Thanks a million for the link!  I was constantly losing my place (and mind) trying to keep the book open while working out the code.  Karma +1 to you!

Now I just need to contend with its reported mistakes about the basic laws of physics and I'm set!

Registered just so I could say thank you! btw if you're reading a 2 page view mode your pdf reader may show the wrong page. The pages with code are intended to be side by side so this version may be better (at least for the exercise on page 56)

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7B-hkfraV8LZjgtd1pNZ19IdTg/view?usp=sharing

sad to hear about the mistakes but the starter kit is fun as hell and you do get a lot of value out of it. I found the explanations about volts/amps to be better over at instructables.com "ROBOTS CLASS" (super fun too)

cheers!

I ordered the kit as well and as far as the book all i got was the above links. I have not used them as yet but if you want to learn some interesting stuff from a tutor ,I recommend you-tube Paul McWorter. He takes you through the math where its needed, using ohms law, some slope formulas  and pretty in dept explanations where needed.

Here is a link to one of his videos on DC motors,i think its lesson 37 , he also teaches classes for Py thon, Raspberry  Pi as well. How can you go wrong there , you learn at your own pace, someone on this site suggested it to me and i have been following it right along ,free to watch and great knowledge was gained .
Save this site for great help from all the people on here for help with programming and or project guidance help, save them their valuable time explaining things you could learn on your own .

Sorry moderators if I violated any rules here with this post.
