Title: New spam detection in place - have you been banned?
Post by: nickgammon on Feb 22, 2015, 05:28 am
The forum now has improved with more aggressive spam detection, along with automatic banning of accounts which are believed to be spam.

In the event that your account is banned, and you believe you did not post spam, please make a new account and post a reply here giving the name of the banned account so we can investigate.

The ban rules may need some fine-tuning, as we want to avoid false positives and also false negatives.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Someone with a certain amount of chutzpah posted spam as a response to this message. :)

User deleted. :P

See: https://github.com/arduino/Arduino/issues/3595 (https://github.com/arduino/Arduino/issues/3595)

Can a mod/admin please verify this account for him/her.

He doesn't look banned now. One of his recent posts had the word "lottery" in it. :P

I can't tell you how many spam posts we get from new users with that keyword in it!

Anyone smell spam?

Hello my Account "Voltage-Ranger" was banned. I wrote a demoprogramm for an Thermal-IR-Sensor and posted it under all Posts from people that had problems with this sensor. Technically maybe spam  :( but my intention was to help people.

Is it possible to re activate the Account for Voltage-Ranger?

I appreciate your trying to help, but it is better to make a new post describing your solution - or add it to the end of the most recent thread about the issue, only. Copying and pasting the same post into multiple threads is likely to arise the ire of people who then report you as spamming. One thread at least seemed to be quite old, so you were basically necro'ing a thread to post your stuff under it.

Post by: HELP-ME on Feb 28, 2016, 12:48 am
My other account is Clockworkmod. I was banned for spamming, without any notice. I do not know of any spam. I had 3 posts, all relevant and constructive. WHAT HAPPENED?

Title: Re: New spam detection in place - have you been banned?
Post by: MAS3 on Feb 28, 2016, 01:08 am
That other account has 16 times the word "idiot!" in its signature.
There are 3 visible posts by that account, by someone who doesn't seem to understand the difference between hardware and software serial ports on a chip, so that is for sure not the reason for being banned.

Your account (or even your pc) might have been hacked by some spammer, causing that other account to be banned now, and the spamming posts removed.
Also for sure, SHOUTING and SHOUTING will not help resolve this.

I have gotten away with spam on other websites until a moderator viewed it, because their filtering system couldn't detect repeating sequences of characters, such as "Potato! Potato! Potato! Potato! I did not post about getting away with spam. I just discovered that my brother posted that "I got away with spam..." from my account as a prank.  Also, I do not have "Idiot!" 16 times in my signature. I don't think I even have a signature. It seems accurate that "I am the guy who doesn't know the difference between hardware and software serial ports...." You said I was unbanned, but I was not.
Title: Re: New spam detection in place - have you been banned?
Post by: nickgammon on Feb 28, 2016, 09:13 pm
The signature of Clockworkmod does in fact have "Idiot!" many times in the signature. It still does. I suggest instead of using huge fonts to shout at us here, that you shout at your brother. You are expected to be responsible for actions taken when logged into your account.

You might point out to your brother than his "prank" got you banned from a forum you were interested in, and it wasn't funny.

I have converted your ban to a partial ban - you can read posts and are not IP or email-address banned. I suggest making a new user (well, you already have) and try to keep your brother away from the keyboard.

The IP address you were using (123.231.122.165) emits a steady unrelenting stream of spam.  Use a different IP address.  Request your internet service provide terminate the miscreant's account.

That IP address is located in Sri Lanka. It is on quite a few spam blacklists. Complain to your ISP that by allowing spammers to use their service, other users who are legitimate are penalized.

My preferred browser is Chromium but using Chromium on Linux Mint I now receive

"Sorry stowite, you are banned from using this forum!
Sock puppet.
This ban is not set to expire."

but I can login using Firefox!

I would like to be able to go back to using Chromium and would be interested to know what triggered my ban!

Clearing browser cache (and restarting Opera) worked for me to get rid of the "ban".

IMHO just a caching problem and no real ban.

Best

Firefox in two case.
I have cleared Android browser cache.

I cleared the Chromium cashe and that made no difference. I then used BleachBit to clear everything from Chromium and that too made no difference.

EDIT : I have just cleared Chromium history again and now it seems to be OK ! But why was I banned in the first place?

@stowite

They are implementing a new sign in system and doing some overall upgrades to the forum so some glitches are to be expected.

Just to tie things together; here is a link to a discussion of the unwarranted banning problem, on Github:

https://github.com/arduino/forum-issues/issues/177

I posted about my experience there, and other people have joined in.

Short version - if you get this message, clear your browsers cookies:

"
Sorry (username), you are banned from using this forum.
Sock puppet
The ban is not set to expire

"

Yes - it really does say "Sock puppet", it's not a picture of one.

That may be enough.  I also cleared a few other things while I was there:

"The actual step I took in Waterfox (same thing as Firefox, pretty much) was to go to History, then Clear Recent History. I had Cookies, Cache, Offline Website Data and Site Preferences all ticked, and no others, and the "Time range to clear" set to Today.

I then just refreshed a tab where the sock puppet ban message was showing, and it went away."

(that bit's copied from a post I made in that Github thread).

Going to need more information than "no longer logs me on" and "have not received a ban message".

Title: Re: New spam detection in place - have you been banned?

Okay, I have been posting to this forum for some time. I always keep a record of my usernames and passwords for certainty so when I was blanked I entered my details carefully but I still wasn't recognised.  After several attempts over a number of days nothing had improved so I have setup a new account and that works fine (or I wouldn't be posting this would I?)

Strangely when I sign on in areas other than this forum all my old details come up with no problems so what's happening? Adrifran39 is my username why wouldn't this forum accept it?:(

By "more information" I need to know things like what steps you took (I assume "tried to login using my old credentials") and what error message(s) were displayed.

Title: Re: New spam detection in place - have you been banned?
Post by: Bewildered on May 05, 2017, 10:17 pm
The response to my original username was that either my username or password are incorrect but this is not so - it gets me into other areas of the website - and all the info from the original username comes up with the new Bewildered account and I have not re-entered it! Can you not check if the username is still in existence on the forum?

Hallo,

I have been banned with my account "Valerie_Research". I was in contact with ballscrewbob the whole time to avoid beeing considered as spam...
Do you have any advise what I can do now?

Thank you in advance!
Valerie
Posting the same topic THREE times in different parts of the forum IS spam.

How else would you define it?

(Creating duplicate accounts is also frowned-upon)
Title: Re: New spam detection in place - have you been banned?
Post by: ballscrewbob on Nov 28, 2018, 07:04 pm
A little harsh IMHO.

OP was in contact with me in the midst of the double posting and was advised not to post elsewhere.
She complied with that request from what I can see.

A secondary account although frowned upon seems like it was made to be able to plead her case.

Not SPAM in the true sense of the word by any standard.
Cross posting sure.

Private messages always works.  Report-to-moderator always works.

I have been banned...
...given a timeout.  Looks like three days.

Do you have any advise what I can do now?
Wait three days.

Or, ask politely for the timeout to be ended early.

And, stop cross-posting.

In my mind this is resolved.

However a point of order was made "In the event that your account is banned, and you believe you did not post spam, please make a new account and post a reply here giving the name of the banned account so we can investigate."

Yea the very first post in the whole thread...

Back then, ban meant ban. ({sigh} How I yearn for The Good Old Days)

Now, you could just use the "report to moderator" control.
