Do you have File > Preferences > Show verbose output during: upload checked?
Yes.
I have a strange question. How did you open the sketch that you're trying to upload? Did you start the IDE by opening the sketch(double clicking on the sketch file or whatever) or did you start the IDE and then open the sketch file(File > Open or File > Sketchbook or File > Examples)?
The reason I ask is that someone reported that they can only upload if they start the IDE the second way: https://github.com/arduino/Arduino/issues/5173 (https://github.com/arduino/Arduino/issues/5173)
Thank you very much. Sketch uploaded successfully.
Uploaded by starting the IDE the second way (File -> Open) : https://github.com/arduino/Arduino/issues/5173
Thank you.

Board Model: Arduino UNO R3

Sketch:
void setup() {
pinMode(13, OUTPUT);
}
void loop() {
digitalWrite(13, HIGH);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(13, LOW);
delay(1000);
}
----
Glad to hear it helped!
So when it wouldn't open you had opened the sketch the first way?
Yes, the error occurred when the IDE is launched by clicking on the .ino sketch file.
Thank you.
Glad to know the cause of the issue, there have been multiple reports of this on the forum but it was hard to know the cause since the IDE wasn't displaying any useful information on the error. Now that I know I can help everyone out.
Yes.
Thank you.

Select the port of your Arduino from the
Tools > Port menu. If that menu is grayed out or the port of your Arduino board is not shown then one of the following may be the cause:
- You may need to install the driver for the USB-serial chip on your Arduino. Determine which chip is used on your Arduino and install the driver.
- You may be using a charge-only or defective USB cable. Test your cable on another device to confirm that it works for data.
- Using a USB 3.0 port on your computer may cause problems. Try a USB 2.0 port or use a USB 2.0 hub plugged into your USB 3.0 port.

@DarkZero987
Is that a comment or a question ?
Please do this:
- File > Preferences > Show verbose output during: > compilation (uncheck) > upload (check) > OK
- Sketch > Upload
- After the upload fails you'll see a button on the right side of the orange bar "Copy error messages". Click that button.
- Paste the error messages in a reply here USING CODE TAGS (</> button on the toolbar).
it'll be great if i could get some help too

Incorrect port selected. Select a port from tools -> port menu; it's got COM4 selected (which presumably you used previously), but it's saying that there is no COM4. Windows will often assign a different port number depending on which USB port a device is plugged into (and occasionally for no apparent reason), so you just need to select the correct port.
Hi,
I had the same problem and i just went to Tools+Port, and then selected the one that showed Arduino Genuino/UNO, in my case (i switched from port 13 to port 20).
It worked.

@kmspavan
Just posting the error message is useful but it would be better if you included any other info such as the board being used and any additional components you may have connected.
Might I suggest you read the posts at the top of the forum section too please.

plz help I dont know what the problem is
Remove any connections to pins 0 and 1. These pins are used for communication with your computer, including uploads. Connecting anything to these pins can interfere with uploads.
Make sure you have the correct board selected from the
Tools > Board menu.
Make sure you have selected the port of your Arduino board from the
Tools > Port menu.
Sometimes the port will be labeled with the board name in the menu. Other times it will not. If you don't know which port is your Arduino, you can find it like this:
- Unplug your Arduino board from the computer.
- Tools > Port
- Note the ports, if any, listed in the menu.
- Close the Tools menu
- Plug your Arduino board into the computer.

I'm getting the same error while uploading the code to the board.
I'm new to this and I'm just trying to follow what instructables has put up.
the error message is :
Sketch uses 21624 bytes (67%) of program storage space. Maximum is 32256 bytes.
Global variables use 910 bytes (44%) of dynamic memory, leaving 1138 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 2048 bytes.
avrdude: ser_open(): can't set com-state for "\\.\COM4"
SO what does this mean?
What is the second method of uploading the code? How to do it?
How to resolve this?
Thanks in advance.

Try restarting your computer. Sometimes the COM port will get stuck in a bad state and the restart fixes that.

Problem uploading to board. See http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#upload for suggestions.
please i need a solution
- Tools > Port - The new port listed in the menu is your Arduino board.
Hi Guys
I know this thread is pretty old, but I thought I should add what I found since all the above suggestions did not work for me.
What ended up working for me was changing the programmer (Tools > Programmer) from AVRISP mkII to ArduinoISP, then the sketch was able to upload without any errors. Then I changed it back to AVRISP mkII and it still worked. Not sure why or how this happened. Might be worth trying if none of the other solutions worked for you.
Thanks for your time and I hope this helps you out. I really do. I know how frustrating this problem is, first hand.

Hi,
I have the same problem. The output is the following:
Make sure you have the correct board selected from the
Tools > Board menu.
Make sure you have selected the port of your Arduino board from the
Tools > Port menu.
Sometimes the port will be labeled with the board name in the menu. Other times it will not. If you don't know which port is your Arduino, you can find it like this:

My case may be interesting in that the error output is somewhat different.
I use an official AtMEGA 2560 board with IDE 1.8.9. Everything worked fine until yesterday ( meaning successful uploads for several days)
Of course I still use the good port : COM6 for me (the only one that appears when I connect the board !)
Now I get that same message with windows 10, Linux Debian, two different machines and two different cables :

You need to select the port of your Arduino board from the Tools > Port menu. If you find multiple ports in the menu and don't know which is the Arduino, Try this:
- With the Arduino board unplugged from the USB open the Tools > Port menu and note the listed ports. If the Port menu is gray and disabled then that means there are no ports available.
- Close the Tools > Port menu.
- Plug in the USB cable on the Arduino board
- Wait a little while for the Arduino board to connect
- Open Tools > Port, the new port on the list is your Arduino board. In some cases it will have the name of the board next to the port name but this doesn't happen with all boards. If the Port menu is gray and disabled then that means your Arduino board didn't install correctly. You may need to install a driver.
- Select your Arduino's port from the menu.
Too bad that the only suggested solution is to select the right port. Obviously my problem is very different with my config :
avrdude: usbdev_open(): did not find any USB device "usb" (0x03eb:0x2104)
Maybe a faulty board ? Strange, since I get the informations from the board through the USB connection.

Your problem is caused by holding the Shift key while you click the Upload button. That causes the Arduino IDE to do an "Upload Using Programmer" instead of a standard Upload. Since you don't have an ISP programmer connected, that won't work, thus the error.

Thank you for your help Pert. Though I can't remember hitting the shift key or clicking the programmer option , the fact is that when I carefully select upload or CTRL U I now succeed every time I try. May it go on !
Thank you again.
You're welcome. I'm glad to hear it's working now. Enjoy!

This one is really tricky because the output is not providing us with any useful information about the error. Please try restarting your computer. Maybe by some miracle that will fix the problem, or at least cause the output to show some more info.

Some common causes:-
Over aggressive anti virus or similar
Lack of user permissions.
Actual virus or similar.
Incorrect sketch location or changed during IDE use.
Please rule those out first and use THIS POS (https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=148850.0)T as a guide to any extra information you can provide.

- Tools > Port - The new port listed in the menu is your Arduino board.
Hello, guys!
I got the same problem and the only thing that worked to me as to open the IDE as root.

I'll ask you to provide the verbose output in hopes that will provide us with more information we can use to identify the cause of the error.
Please do this:
- (In the Arduino IDE) File > Preferences
- Uncheck the checkbox next to "Show verbose output during: compilation"
- Check the checkbox next to "Show verbose output during: upload
- Click "OK"
- Sketch > Upload
- After the upload fails, you'll see a button on the right side of the orange bar "Copy error messages" (or the icon that looks like two pieces of paper at the top right corner of the black console window in the Arduino Web Editor). Click that button.
- In a forum reply here, click on the reply field.
- Click the </> button on the forum toolbar. This will add the forum's code tags markup to your reply.
- Press "Ctrl + V". This will paste (https://lifehacker.com/how-to-copy-cut-and-paste-for-beginners-5801525) the upload output between the code tags.
- Move the cursor outside of the code tags before you add any additional text to your reply.

Does it show that same output every time you try to upload, or is there sometimes more output? The reason I ask is because usually there is a descriptive error message that gives us a better idea of what went wrong.
So I have been having a problem uploading a sketch (obviously). After verifying my code everything is good and no errors. however once I try to upload, this error pops up and I don't know what to do. On the orange line, it says, "the selected serial port does not exist or your board is not connected." The board is connected and power light is on, while my serial port has worked in the past. I read someone else's post saying just opening a folder can cause problems and to open IDE beforehand, yet when I close the app and re-open my work is still there and the error persists. The error also mentions, "failed to read all of flash memory rc=-2. Any ideas to help?

sorry, working on getting you the verbose version....
Now the IDE freezes without even giving a message....
I'm tearing my hair out - I don't seem to be able to upload any sketch - even blink - if my Arduino has any kind of shield. And I can only upload without a shield if I have previously disconnected the computer.
I can't even make my Arduino give a verbose error report. I have checked the box (see attached screen shot) and I still only get the error report pasted below.

@hayttom
I see you are using the windows STORE APP.
Some people have reported issues with that version so we usually recommend using the full version download.
Many have said that it works better and has cured thier problems.
Somehow today everything seems to be uploading normally. If there are any theories about what was going wrong I'd be interested to hear them, but otherwise I guess this is resolved.
I can't upload the demo sketch "Blink" to a UNO from the IDE 1.8.13. The Acer Nitro 5 PC is running Windows 10 Home. Version 1909 Build 18363.1198
I have tried all three USB ports on the PC. The IDE sees the UNO Board and reports Board Info with no problem, but when I try to upload the sketch, I get the following detailed error code. I have tried changing to Port 4 and also to Port 10, but same result. I've also tried running an earlier version of the IDE - 1.6.8 but with the same results.
UNO Board works fine with an older PC.
Any thoughts?

avrdude done. Thank you.
Problem uploading to board. See http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#upload for suggestions.
This report would have more information with
"Show verbose output during compilation"
option enabled in File -> Preferences.

Remove any connections to pins 0 and 1 on your Arduino board. These pins are used for communication with your computer, including uploads. Connecting anything to these pins can interfere with uploads.
Make sure you have the correct board selected from the
Tools > Board menu.
Make sure you have selected the port of your Arduino board from the
Tools > Port menu. I notice you have COM1 selected, which is typically the internal port of your computer, NOT the Arduino board.
Sometimes the port will be labeled with the board name in the menu. Other times it will not. If you don't know which port is your Arduino board, you can find it like this:
- Unplug your Arduino board from the computer.
- Tools > Port
- Note the ports, if any, listed in the menu.
- Close the Tools menu. The ports list is only updated when the Tools menu is re-opened, so this step is essential.
- Plug your Arduino board into the computer.
- Tools > Port - The new port listed in the menu is your Arduino board.
Only COM1 appears, whether or not the arduino is connected.
I might need to play around with the Ports
There are a few possible causes of the board not having a port:
- Your USB cable is not providing a data connection to the computer. Make sure the cable is fully inserted into the Arduino board and the computer. Try a different cable.
- You don't have the driver installed.
- Your board has been destroyed.
@clapudiu
If you are on a windows OS and can only see COM 1 then the first place to start is with drivers as you would expect an Arduino to show COM 3 or above as 1 & 2 are reserved for internal windows usage.
A picture of you board (in focus) might also help here or a direct link to where you got it.
