Post by: harshith08 on Apr 10, 2019, 01:58 pm
i am trying to upload bluetooth code to arduino nano, but im getting this type of error(avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding).
i thought my arduino nano board was dumped by retrying uploading code to board and this error appeared even i used new board can i get a confident solution?

This sort of error could be caused by your antivirus software. Try TEMPORARILY disabling your antivirus for a single compilation to see if the problem goes away, then turn the antivirus back on. If the problem doesn't occur with the antivirus off you will need to adjust the settings of your antivirus to whitelist the appropriate file, folder, or process so it doesn't interfere with compilation.

Make sure you have the FTDI breakout attached the right way around. The pin marked "DTR" on the FTDI board should be connected to the pin marked "G" on the LilyPad, then all the other pins are aligned from there.

If you have anything wired to the RX and TX pins on the LilyPad, that may interfere with the upload, so disconnect it before trying the upload.

This Dude problem is getting to be a pain in the projects, I have tried every fix I can find, but nothing works. I know I'm not the one to figure it out but hope someone does soon .My problem started about three wks ago and none of the Arduino  boards work. I don't see any upgrades or other changes that could have caused the problem. I tried the nano with the old Bootloader and no luck either. When I reset the uno"s   "tried 4 different ones" I get the 3 blinks so I guess they should be alright. I see some have tried some things that have worked for them none have worked for me after many TRYS. Am I wrong in thinking this is Arduino problem and they should be looking into it. It's probably a easy fix and everyone is looking to deep. Most dudes are good guys but We have a stinker here. Sorry for the rattling on but it is annoying when nothing works.

none of the Arduino  boards work.
Are you saying you have multiple Arduino boards that all started having the same problem at the same time?

Am I wrong in thinking this is Arduino problem and they should be looking into it.
It's impossible to say whose problem this is. Many thousands of people are using Arduino's software every day with absolutely no problems uploading. Of the tiny percentage who do have uploading errors, the vast majority are caused by user error or damaged/defective hardware. Anyway, it's not really productive to talk about whoese problem it is.

If you have any external circuitry connected to your Arduino board, try disconnecting it to see if that solves the problem.

Yes to the multiple boards. The dude happens with or without any hook ups. Is there a way to check if boards are damaged, cause the ones I used were not new. I have tried a number of Sketch's that comply and have uploaded before without issue . Now I get this dude  error when I try them also. I also tried a different  computer same issue. I took all Arduino files off computer and started over that did not work either. {uninstalled also}.I just made the lego bulldozer 3 x scaled up and have been trying for 3 weeks to solve this issue and get it running. I haven't run into any dude I couldn't get along with but I guess there is always the first one . got to keep pushing on, maybe I'll get lucky. This is My issue message

Make sure you have selected the port of your Arduino board from the Tools > Port menu.

Sometimes the port will be labeled with the board name in the menu. Other times it will not. If you don't know which port is your Arduino, you can find it like this:

For what it's worth, I've been fooling with a couple of Pro-mini clones today. I've been working on a project using a 3.3V tft display, and wanted to keep the whole project on one voltage to avoid level translation. I have several 5V boards and one 3.3V. I've always had issues trying to upload sketches to the 3.3V board, and I've read that a 5V board will run at 3.3V. So I powered it @ 3.3V and sure enough it took the upload and ran it fine. (an example sketch from the Adafruit tft library) BUT I received an error in the verbose output at upload. Running IDE 1..8.7  I've posted details here
https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=610726.msg4140962#msg4140962 (https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=610726.msg4140962#msg4140962)

To reiterate a point made on that post, I then remembered I had IDE 1.8.4 loaded on my old laptop. I ran the same setup on it, and the sketch again uploaded, and ran fine, this time with a clean verbose output.

I must have been in a masochistic mood, because I updated to the latest IDE 1.8.9 . I then could not upload to the board at all; getting "not in sync" errors.
I then rolled back to IDE 1.8.7 and uploads worked again (with same errors).

Now the 3.3V board as stated would never take an upload, keep in mind that I had selected ProMini 3.3V 8mhz in the board selection menu. Just for kicks today I selected 5V 16mhz as the board and it took an upload :o  I don't know if all that helps in pursuit of all the problems that seem to have appeared but I hope it does.

FOOTNOTE: Through all that, I was able to upload to my UNO.

Well I'm still having the same problem. I'm thinking maybe I should reburn the bootloader but don't know how. Are the bootloaders the same in all the same boards? I have 3, uno 3 boards and none of them work. I retried my nano with old bootloader  and it did upload but I can't check if it works cause I need the uno for that..I know I'm a pest but at 83 yrs old  this is what makes My days interesting.

LOL indeed... and I'm not far behind. I'd suggest backing up a bit and verify all the criteria required to upload to one of the UNO's first. IE: is the proper board selected, is the proper port selected? I know that seems redundant, but I've trapped myself many times with simple slip-ups. Try uploading a simple sketch like "blink". Forgive me if you've done all this, but with the thread getting longer, it's hard to keep track.

There are multiple instructionals out there to load bootloaders, if you google, you should be able to find one. That being said, if you use a breadboard setup for interconnecting, I can say that has been one of my major sources of problems.

Review my last post regarding IDE ver's 1.8.9 and 1.8.7. Now I haven't seen any strangeness with the UNO but I have with Pro-mini's and Nano's. Do you have access to an older IDE to try?

Try to use Nano with "Old Bootloader". It could help if it is chinese clone.

@Kapil_Varadhan (http://"https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?action=profile;u=1337884")
UNO does not have same problem as Nano. Maybe you could write more detailed info.
Is it clone...?

Same issue here, with three different nano versions.  I took the advice from above and downloaded and installed an older version of the Arduino IDE (1.8.7, found at firehorse.com).  Seems to have solved the upload problem, but the Serial Port/Console doesn't print out messages.

Update: got the serial port working (operator error), but 1.8.7 still is a bit flakey; I have to swap the cpu type every once in a while to avoid the avrdude error.  But at least now I can work on my project.  Might try 1.8.5, but bleh maybe not.

Hmmm. Thanks for the tip.  I think I'll have to give my codes to a friend so he can upload them to the nanos for now.  But I think I'll try an older software version monday.

You can also get older versions right from Arduino.cc

Hiya - A quick note to stop some red herrings.

I received this error with an Funduino (Keyes) Pro Mini and Funduino FTDI Basic. Both came with no documentation or pin-out markings for the programming pins.

It took me quite a few hours of searching and poking around with a multimeter before I realised the Funduino board has reversed the alignment of the pins on the interface. When put the FTDI I/F card upside-down it worked!! Why would these guys do that I have no idea .. anyway all good now - working perfectly.

Doc is here (thankyou tinkbox.ph)

Hi guys,

I had this error many times..  And ordered new FTDI adapters :) Even two. Yesterday.

But now I found, that if I want to upload a sketch to my bare-bone Atmel328p, I need to wait some little time after closing Serial monitor. One or Couple minutes was enough. Of course, Bluetooth adapter must be disconnected also.
And now if it's not uploading - I am just going to make cafe :) And it always helps now.

I just tried updating today and this is the error message I get when trying upload to NANO.  I have NO problems sending my code to UNO or MICRO:  Can anyone help. This is maddening.  :(

Do you have a Nano, or do you have a Nano Every? Despite the similar names, these are very different boards.

Yes, NANO EVERY is the one I selected.  Thanks for asking.

Update. Restarted computer several times. Jiggled the USB cable.  Looks like code uploaded. NO errors although.... there is an odd little hardware error (NOT part of the main errors) that came up.  I don't really know if the code was successfully uploaded or not.  I'll have to wire it up and check.  Ugh...

Remove any connections to pins 0 and 1. These pins are used for communication with your computer, including uploads. Connecting anything to these pins can interfere with uploads.

Make sure you have the correct board selected from the custom Tools menu (the part where "Atmega328P@16M,5V" is selected. There are several variations of the Microduino/mCookie-Core (328p) board and you need to make sure you have the configuration set correctly for the board you are using.

Make sure you have selected the port of your Arduino board from the Tools > Port menu.

Sometimes the port will be labeled with the board name in the menu. Other times it will not. If you don't know which port is your Arduino, you can find it like this:

Hi, I just got back into my office after a fair time away and decided to muck around with my arduinos!

I was notified by the Mac that there was a new version of arduinocc so i downloaded it and lowe and behold i have the same error that everyone here is talking about!

I have many different arduinos lying around and decided to reset several to "Blink".

The non genuine nanos all worked but only after selecting Old boot loader!

The non genuine UNO worked straight away!

The atmega 2560s all worked straight away!

The ARDUINO and SAINSMART leonardos all failed to load!

so I got the old windows laptop out which was still running version 1.65 and it was quite happy to load the leonardos.

Nothing was happy to run the old genuine UNOs?

All boards were correctly selected, completely bare and as you see were tested against different operating systems and versions.

I then rolled back the boards in board manager on the apple but arduinocc itself was less than happy with that so i am stuck at the moment with having to load different boards from different computers!

Naturally i cannot relistically roll back my apple as the update process is veeeeery long!

I have not tried the old linux laptop as it is under heaps of stuff in the shed somewhere but it was happy to load all of these boards without any problem last time it was booted (four years ago).

Naturally I along with the others who are struggling with the avrdude communication issue would love to see a resolution!

If my old (not updated) windows system and latest updated apple can be of help please let me know what I need to do to give you chaps the information that will help isolate the error... err problem.. heheheh

Cheers.

Graham

Why not simply make one sticky topic regarding upload issue and the most probable causes? There is at least 10 new topics with the same question in last 10 days and the same replies with steps for solving ...

I had the same issue.

This is probably the case with boards sourced from local shops.

I could resolve it by choosing the following menu option in the Arduino IDE:

         Tools > Processor > ATmega328P (Old Bootloader)

I was getting the same error string on a Nano clone from a kit. Thank you to everyone who suggested to run the program with the ATmega328P (Old BootLoader) selected as processor. That fixed my problem. I also found helpful the advice to test my Nano unit with the basic blink sketch. I got the same error running blink, changed the bootLoader and blink worked fine. Then I ran the program I started with and that uploaded fine as well.

Power down the board. Disconnect any wires to the ground and reset pins of your board. Connect the usb cable, & try to upload again. Power down the board, reconnect any wires, and then power it back up. See if it works.

I had a similar issue today, turns out it was my USB cable!

I was using a charge only cable, not a data cable. Definitely worth a check.

Worked like a charm few months ago..
I installed a new SSD on my laptop so installed the latest Arduino IDE since than the upload not works.

OS: Ubuntu 19.10
I using an official starter Arduino Uno kit with all of its own cable and parts.

power off/on, cable unplug, board reset not helped...
no cabling on the pins.

Try a loopback test:

If the loopback test failed, the USB to TTL serial adapter is damaged and it's unlikely to be worth repairing your board.

If the loopback test passed, or if you skipped the loopback test. Try doing a Burn Bootloader. You'll need an ISP programmer. If you don't own a programmer, you can use a spare Arduino board as an "Arduino as ISP" programmer:

Hi all,
I have a very special case, but I found the same error.

Special case:

Everything works fine, like:

BUT

Just after sketch write Arduino get a power cycle (normal behaviour) and ...
I assume IDE would like to catch the bootloader (without success) and read back the code?

At this point I get the subjected error.
However a moment later (when Arduino boots? when USBIO connection reestablished?) everything (including USB monitor window) works fine.

Because this is very likely not avrdude related AND I can use Arduino IDE same as I would program "local" Arduino, I have no time to track down the problem.

If only somebody (who knows Arduino IDE well) could confirm that I lost "only" a kind of safety net, so I will recognise harder if my code somehow will not uploaded...

Thank you very much.

If only somebody (who knows Arduino IDE well) could confirm that I lost "only" a kind of safety net, so I will recognise harder if my code somehow will not uploaded...
It's the verification step that's failing. That's where it reads the uploaded binary back from the microcontroller's flash memory and compares it to the .hex file on your hard drive. Verification is intended to alert you if the data was somehow corrupted during the upload. After reading tens of thousands of posts on the forum over the last 7 years, I don't remember a case of the verification catching a legitimate problem, so I don't think it's a big deal if it's not working for you. You can turn it off in the Arduino IDE at File > Preferences > Verify code after upload.

After installing some updates I also got the issue that I couldn't upload any sketch anymore, the only thing I had to change is to select the old bootloader to fix the problem.
Now everything works as it did before so I highly recommend for those with the same issue to first try to select the old bootloader and then try again before you start doing anything else.
For those with the Chinese clone with the CH340 USB SERIAL chip on board make sure you have selected the right programmer, it should be AVRISP mkII
Check your COM port too and if you selected the right Arduino board.
If these changes still don't work I suggest to completely remove your IDE software and reinstall everything, don't forget to reinstall the USB driver too if you have the Chinese clone, then it should be working again.
I hope this is helpful to you and I wish you success figuring it out.

Good advice for anyone with a Nano having this problem.

make sure you have selected the right programmer, it should be AVRISP mkII
The Tools > Programmer menu selection is only used when you are doing Tools > Burn Bootloader or Sketch > Upload Using Programmer. When you are doing a standard upload, the Tools > Programmer menu selection is completely ignored, so it doesn't matter what you have it set to.

Check your COM port too and if you selected the right Arduino board.
More good advice!

If these changes still don't work I suggest to completely remove your IDE software and reinstall everything
I can't think of a case where re-installing the IDE would solve this particular error. There are other upload errors that can be fixed by reinstalling the hardware package (e.g., Arduino AVR Boards), but that is when it's installed to the Arduino15 (or .arduino15 on Linux) folder, and uninstalling the Arduino IDE doesn't touch that folder, so the problem remains after the IDE re-installation.

Remove any connections to pins 0 and 1. These pins are used for communication with your computer, including uploads. Connecting anything to these pins can interfere with uploads.

Make sure you have the correct board selected from the Tools > Board menu.

Make sure you have selected the port of your Arduino board from the Tools > Port menu.

Sometimes the port will be labeled with the board name in the menu. Other times it will not. If you don't know which port is your Arduino, you can find it like this:

stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding).
In my case with two brandnew Nano v3/CH340.
1. Check is board connected and responsing - Tools->Get Board Info
2. Change PROCESSOR type for ATmega328P (Old Bootloader)
3. Try upload sketch from Examples (like Blink) File->Examples->01.Basics->Blink (Crl+U)
Thats all!

Are you saying you have multiple Arduino boards that all started having the same problem at the same time?
It's impossible to say whose problem this is. Many thousands of people are using Arduino's software every day with absolutely no problems uploading. Of the tiny percentage who do have uploading errors, the vast majority are caused by user error or damaged/defective hardware. Anyway, it's not really productive to talk about whoese problem it is.

If you have any external circuitry connected to your Arduino board, try disconnecting it to see if that solves the problem.
Second option solved the issue. Take out all the external circuits which are connected to your board
Title: Re: avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding
Post by: pert on Jan 31, 2020, 10:26 am
I'm glad to hear you're able to upload again @Kukka!

Now you just need to identify the specific problem with the external circuitry you had connected when you weren't able to upload. The most common way for external circuitry to interfere with uploads is if you have anything connected to pins 0 and 1 on the non-native USB boards (e.g., Uno, Nano, Mega, Pro Mini). Those pins are also used for uploads, so connecting anything to them can interfere with the uploads.

Try a loopback test:
  • Disconnect power from the board.
  • Remove all connections and shields from the board.
  • Force the processor to remain in reset by connecting a jumper wire from the RESET to the GND pin.
  • Connect a jumper from the RX pin (Arduino pin 0) to the TX pin (Arduino pin 1).
  • Connect the board to your computer.
  • Select the port of your board from the **Tools > Port** menu.
  • **Tools > Serial Monitor**
  • Type some text into the input field at the top of the Serial Monitor window.
  • Press Enter. If the text you typed is shown in Serial Monitor's output window, the loopback test passed. If the text was not shown, the loopback test failed.
  • Close Serial Monitor.
  • Disconnect the board from the computer.
  • Remove the two jumper wires.

If the loopback test failed, the USB to TTL serial adapter is damaged and it's unlikely to be worth repairing your board.

Thanks Pert, seems the loopback test failed :(
Do I need a new board than? That`s sure?

Hello,

I had the same problem that says "stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding".

I have chosen ATmega328P (Old Bootloader) from the Tools drop-down menu.
Also, I made sure my board and ports are correct.

I hope it helps.
Thank you.

Remove any connections to pins 0 and 1 on your Arduino board.

Hi all! Just a quick summary of what has worked for me.
I noticed that all my arduino nano's suddenly had this issue of "not being in sync" or something when I tried to upload a code. (you need verbose output during upload/compilation to see this). What's WEIRD is that I was able to upload code using the Pocket AVR Programmer and the 3x2 pin header on the nano/uno, but it didn't work with the USB... odd.

SO.

I did two things and I'm not even sure they were both necessary:

1) (may be optional) I went to sparkfun and followed their link to WCH website. You can use google chrome and translate the webpage (unless you speak mandarin). Then download the CH340/CH341/etc. driver package. Once you have this, put it in the folder for arduino/drivers/ftdi bus drivers (or similar). Go to the device manager and plug in your arduino, assuming you already have some sort of CH340 drivers (windows usually does). right click the port for your CH340 device and click update driver. It will show you the folder you need and you can put your new drivers there. Then inside the popup window for "update driver" go to that same folder, and select the .inf file that came in your CH340 package. The driver is now up to date.

2) Idk why this works but give it a shot. I've done this before with success, but can't explain why. You will need the Pocket AVR Programmer or similar (like $15 on amazon or sparkfun). Plug it in and make sure you already have all the necessary drivers installed. Go to tools and select the programmer (USBtinyISP) and select the board nano. Change the processor to "ATMEGA328 (old bootloader)". Then click "burn bootloader" in tools. Now go back and change the board to "Arduino Genuino Uno". Burn the bootloader with these settings. Now you basically changed the bootloader from A to B back to A. In my experience this works.

I think the reason this works is because I mostly use knockoff arduino's for cheap because I use so many of them for little projects and such. But this has worked for me so far. I hope this is helpful!

I noticed that all my arduino nano's suddenly had this issue of "not being in sync" or something when I tried to upload a code.
Usually the easy fix for this is to select Tools > Processor > ATmega328P (Old Bootloader).

I was able to upload code using the Pocket AVR Programmer and the 3x2 pin header on the nano/uno, but it didn't work with the USB... odd.
Note that when you do an "Upload Using Programmer" it erases the bootloader, which makes it so you can no longer upload over USB until after you have done a Tools > Burn Bootloader.

You will need the Pocket AVR Programmer or similar (like $15 on amazon or sparkfun).
Another option is to turn a spare working Arduino board into an "Arduino as ISP" programmer:
https://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ArduinoISP (https://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ArduinoISP)
but it is handy to have a dedicated ISP programmer like the Pocket AVR Programmer, so that's a good choice too.

Change the processor to "ATMEGA328 (old bootloader)". Then click "burn bootloader" in tools.
This step is unnecessary.

change the board to "Arduino Genuino Uno". Burn the bootloader with these settings.
This is a great tip! That will free up 1.5 kB of program memory that would have otherwise been used for the bloated Nano bootloader. It also makes it so you are no longer subject to the bug in the Nano's old bootloader that causes it to go into an endless reset loop after a watchdog reset. Just remember to always select Tools > Board > Arduino Uno when using your Nano after this.

I double check all the factors which can produce this type of error but it's still not solved. Please check the below file.

For me, the problem was I had Arduino Uno selected but then I found out my board is Arduino Leonardo.

This caused the error messages above and its repeatable.

Not sure why Arduino didn't design the boards to be recognizable by the software.

Remove any connections to pins 0 and 1 on your Arduino board.

If you don't know which port is your Arduino board, you can find it like this:

Select Arduino or file basis operating system you use and select preferences. Under preferences find "Proxy" and change the value to No Proxy. That fixes the communication error
