Title: Missing digital signature for driver on Windows 8
Post by: opqdan on Mar 02, 2012, 07:01 am
This is on Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Beta), but there's no reason to think this will change (unless it's a Windows bug, and then I should report it).

When installing the driver, Windows will report the error:
"The third-party INF does not contain digital signature information"

From what I can tell, the driver needs to be signed to work on anything past Vista, but my 64bit Win7 machine is fine with the same driver that Win8 is rejecting.

Is there a way I can get past this, or is the signature there and somehow not valid (Windows problem?)?

I'm still getting the same issue, win8 doesn't like the digital signature.

I have not tried disabling driver verification (its a boot option) to install this.  I assume it would work, but since I am not required to do that on Win7, I'd more like to figure out what's going on here.

FYI, I reinstalled the driver on Windows7 to check the behavvior (since I couldn't remember).

On 7, installing the driver produces a warning box stating "Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software" but gives you the option to continue, or cancel.

On 8, I've gotten no such option, it seems signing is enforced.  This is annoying, and I imagine there must be a way to turn it off (otherwise, what happens to legacy devices that don't have driver support?).

If you are a legitimate beta tester, you should report the issue. Could be just in the beta so that issues with bad drivers don't impact the testing.

Sorry to hear that the updated inf did not help.
I will need to get a copy of the Windows 8 beta to see if I can figure anything out.

The driver that the Arduino is trying to use is a Microsoft in box driver (usbser.sys), the .inf simply instructs the OS to use that driver when the Arduino is attached to the system.

Well after a day struggling with this i'll go back to 7.
It seems that the driver must be signed.. strange because it's part of windows.
Hope in a future this is solved, but for now it's to soon to adopt Windows 8 Consumer Preview as a stable PC OS to use with a Arduino.

The CAT file just contains the INF?
Title: Re: Missing digital signature for driver on Windows 8

This MSDN article explains what a catalog file is:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff537872(v=vs.85).aspx (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff537872(v=vs.85).aspx)

It basically certifies that the .inf file is authentic and has not been tampered with after the catalog file was created.

I have come up with an alternative method to install the Arduino drivers on Windows 8.
This method does not require new driver files or installation of a test signature.

1. Windows Key + R
2. Enter shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00
3. Click the "OK" button
4. System will restart to a "Choose an option" screen
5. Select "Troubleshoot" from "Choose an option" screen
6. Select "Advanced options" from "Troubleshoot" screen
7. Select "Windows Startup Settings" from "Advanced options" screen
8. Click "Restart" button
9. System will restart to "Advanced Boot Options" screen
10. Select "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement"
11. Once the system starts, install the Arduino drivers as you would on Windows 7

Steps to install driver after Driver Signature Enforcement has been disabled:
1. Right click the Unknown Device in Device Manager
2. Select Update Driver Software
3. Select Browse my computer for software
4. Click Browse button
5. Select the Drivers folder under the location of your Arduino software installation. (Do not select the FTDI folder inside the Drivers folder)
6. Click OK
7. Click Next

Update:
If you have a new system that came with Win 8 pre-installed, Secure Boot has probably been enabled in the BIOS.
The steps above, probably will not work unless Secure Boot has been disabled in the BIOS before performing these steps.

(This device cannot start. (Code 10) - A request for the USB device descriptor failed.)

I got pass the driver verification and successfully installed it, but something doesn't seem to be working right! It has been two days that I'm trying to get my arduino to even blink...

any help please :(

Thanks Louis for sharing the signed inf and certificate.

Has there been any word on the official approach to this problem?
Disabling driver signing, creating your own signing certificates and manually installing root certificates can hardly be in line with Arduino's image of being an "easy to get started with" platform.
Windows 8 is just around the corner now.

Maybe if you alert them on the bug reporting site.

They can't really be expected to support an unreleased operating system.

I was trying to replicate the issue to add the fix to my modded package but it works perfect in a virtualized Windows 8

I have had a few requests to add other versions of the Arduino boards, so I created a new version of the arduino.inf and arduino.cat files.
This version contains all the of the boards in the 1.0 IDE in one file.

Thanks for your work Louis! I've successfully installed the driver for the Arduino Uno on Windows 8 RTM (64 bit). But I recently bought an Arduino Ethernet (not the shield) and an Arduino USBSerial adapter, which I can't get installed. Should your files work for this combination too?

Additionally, Windows 8 is going to launch on October 26 for the general audience. Does anyone has an idea if the drivers are getting signed? Or do we need to keep working with this work-around?

Many thanks!
J

If you use the steps outlined here:

http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php/topic,94651.msg727588.html#msg727588

You can use the original .inf files included with 1.0.1.

Thanks Louis, I found this post already (and applied the steps successfully). But from an "end-user" perspective, having to go through these steps is quite difficult and tedious. :-( You know if the goal is to have the drivers signed properly so the installation is smooth?

Thanks again,
Jan

Fellas, i've tried everything. 2 different arduino uno boards, 2 different computers (Win7x64 and Win8x64), a dozen of goddamn usb cables, all kinds of drivers (including the ones by eried), USB 2.0 as well as 3.0 - this bitch still giving me "device cannot start error 10". Played around with com ports, baud rates and whatnot. Driver is getting installed and and device appears as Arduino Uno in device manager but it DOESNT WANNA START. My condition went beyond frustration - it's despair now. What should i do?? Is there a one 10000% working way??? Both boards seem to be working properly (green LED on and orange flashes sometimes). Should i get a different brand of board (mines both are OSEPP, Uno R3 Plus)? Should i run XP from a USB and try to work on it..? I need a definite answer please...

noxep,

The OSEPP boards are not exactly the same as Arduino UNO boards. You can't use the Arduino supplied driver .inf files with those boards.

The OSEPP boards use the FTDI chips for USB/Serial communication.
You can get the latest FTDI drivers from this location:

Hey, The same thing is happening to me also with the 7 Slate.  I guess it's a hardware issue of some sort.  I even tried using different keyboards and got nowhere.  Unless there is a way to do it through the command prompt, then we're in trouble.

My Arduino UNO R2 works great in Windows 8 Pro.

Thanks a lot, for all !

My steps:

0)Install IDE and change driver port as shows: http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/UnoDriversWindowsXP
1)Restart Win8 then run pressing F8 for "Disable Driver Signature " like here http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php/topic,94651.msg727588.html#msg727588
2)Log out from any user account (even if administrator privvileges etc.) and log as main Administrator account (create new or Turn on from Win 8 Control Panel if Admin disabled)
2)Install this:  http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php?topic=118440.0
3)Connect to other USB port.
4)Run as admin then rejoyce  :D

I,m using simple USB white cable from printer.
Official Arduino 1.0.2 IDE start now properly.

My first day with Arduino 8)

I have been the exact seem thing you have been through ,but after I did what Louis wrote again ( idk if this is necessary :smiley-fat:) I made the following steps :

1] right-Click on "My Computer"
2]selected "Manage"
3]after that clicked on "Device Manager"
4]then Right Clicked on Your Arduino( From "unknown Devices" as I remember ^_^
(probably you already know about all these previous steps , But ... ;))

5]after ,don't click on "update Driver Software" or whatever it was, but instead CLICK ON "Uninstall" .. it should disappear after that
6]Plug out then re plug in your Arduino
7]then do the "update driver software" thingy
8]after that choose in the installing that 2sterednd option in that creepy red screen " install anyway" (I think you know this one too)

I really hope that this will work for as I have even registered in this forum just to post this help :smiley-mr-green: XD for you and
this random solution has worked for me today ;) ;)

Actually everyone, there is a much easier way past all of this. Just bypass the Digital Signature check built into Windows 8

Place the mouse in the lower right corner and chose SETTINGS
Select "Change PC Settings".... then GENERAL  ...... Go to the the bottom under ADVANCED STARTUP,  click RESTART NOW
Then select TROUBLESHOOT -------> ADVANCED OPTIONS --------> STARTUP SETTINGS and select RESTART
When the computer reboots, Press the key 7 for "Disable driver signature enforcement"

Now you can install any unsigned digital signature. Remember this process for any future installations also.

Hi, I got an Arduino Uno yesterday and was trying to install the driver on Windows 8 64-bit.
I got the same certificate message as everyone and after trying Louis' method, I was able to install the .inf through right-click>install. However the Arduino is still not recognized by the IDE. When going to Device Manager, the Arduino is listed as USB-Serial Controller under Other Devices (I know that's the Arduino because when I disconnect it, this device disappears).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS: When trying to "Update Driver Sodtware" from Device Manager and pointing to the drivers folder, I simply get :Windows could not find driver software for your device"

Related to this, I want to use my Mega 2560 as a slave device with a PC (in a Robot) with Windows 7 64 bit.  The problem is that every time I reboot the PC, the Arduino is not recognized, unless I manually unplug and re-plug it in.

Anyone have any suggestion how to fix this?  Obviously pressing F8 at each reboot is not an option.
I want the Arduino to turn the PC off while it is "sleeping", and turn it on again to wake up... but it does not see the Arduino!

Can we just get the driver signed, please?

Thanks!

Made the upgrade to Window 8 Pro this weekend.  All things considered I have noticed a good speed increase over Windows 7.  No major issues except when I plugged my quad into the USB port Mission Planner couldn't find it. So....
After a bit of digging I found this post: http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php/topic,94651.msg716650.html
in which I found a solution that I thought would be helpful to post here for others.
I'm running Mission Planner 1.2.14
Download the 3 files below
Double-click on the .cert file
Click "Install Certificate"
Select "Local Machine"
Next
Select "Place all certificates in the following store" radio button
Click "Browse"
Select "Trusted Root Certificate Authorities"
Click OK
Finish etc...
Repeat  the process, starting at step 2, replace step 8 with "Trusted Publishers"
Once you've added the .cert to both folders, right click on the arduino.inf file and choose "Install"
Open Mission Planner
Connect.
This worked for me first try.  Thanks to Louis @ Arduino for the great instructions, just thought I could save some folks a bit of time by relaying my direct experience with Mission Planner.
Cheers!

if my arduino disconnects i have to do the whole reinstall off the drivers using the erw package and it takes a few tries to get it to work using windows 8. If i need to unplug it, it can take up to 30 minuets to fix. There a fix for this?

This procedure did appear to work on my new ASUS  X202E laptop. Shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00  must be entered EXACTLY with spaces.  I was able to bypass (disable) the file signature issue.  I now have the MEGA 2560 R3 driver installed. However, simple sketches like "blink" will still not compile.  Anyone else have this problem?

Found the alleged "correct" driver for the Mega 2560 R3 with the security sig. Installed it and still didn't work with windows 8 and my ASUS X202E laptop with touchscreen.  HOWEVER, I went into compatibility check and set compatibility to Windows 7 and all is well (this same MEGA and cable HAS always worked with windows 7 and my HP desktop machine, so I knew the board and cable were ok).

These are for windows 8.1

for separate x86 and x64 driver you can use
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm
you need to install them manually from device manger. first for the FTsomething unknown device and then for the Virtual com port both drivers are in the same folder.
I used this method  and it worked for me.

Another method is to get the setup to do this for you.
for a driver setup use
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM%20v2.08.30%20WHQL%20Certified%20for%20Windows%208.1.exe

I've read and tried the various solutions offered, but with 64 bit it doesn't seem to work.
You aren't allowed some of the options needed.
Anyone got a solution that works on the 64 bit, Windows 8.1 system?

if using win8 64 bit, you download the software Driver Pack at the link http://adf.ly/u3y7S . For the other win, you look at the software Easy Driver Pack blog: http://storesofts.wordpress.com/ultility/
