A picture of a new radio board that I am prototyping is at http://tinyurl.com/yl53nju
The board uses the TI 2,4GHz CC2500 radio and has a folded dipole PCB antenna.
Low cost radio without a Zigbee stack.

I will testing it as soon as I get my hot-plate soldering setup going ;)

The parts and PCB cost are probably in the $2-$3 range. I do not know the assembly
costs. Since the CC2500 is q QFN with a ground pad and all the parts are 0402's
I am not setup to perform any assembly other than prototype.
