Well yeah you guys are right, I did not ponder over those facts too.

One of the sad things is that the current arduino is pretty much at the top of the performance range where it is possible to build one yourself from chips, on a breadboard or homebrew PCB.  I mean, it's nice that things like BeagleBoard are "open source", but there isn't any way I can build a "slightly customized" version in my home shop...  Even the extisting Arduino Mega, or the ARM-based semi-compatibles are mostly beyond the "home construction" range.

Yes, unfortunately the best we can get at the moment is something like the 644 in DIP.

I wish there was a 1280/2560 in DIP but I doubt they'd get enough sales. Mind you, I can probably solder the SMD versions without too much trouble now (especially with my hot plate).

I think you'll find that we're talking about ARM type chips - no cooler required...
