Hack fan remote

I have this fan remote that can turn on and off the fan, control the speed, and the timer of the fan. To start, I would like to hack just the on/off switch. In the attached pics I've circled the 2 pins that turn on the fan when connected (and off if connected a second time).
So basically what I need to do is power up the remote, and have the arduino act as a switch between these 2 pins, am I right about that? If anyone has a better idea or is sure I'm wrong, please let me know.

I read online that to use the arduino as a switch I might need one of these: http://www.vishay.com/docs/83730/83730.pdf
Is it not possible to hack the remote without such a component?

Thanks in advance for your help.
