Any code depends on the motor shield you use.
The code linked to by ard_newbie definitely does not work for a motor shield that is accessed via I2C like Adafruit motor shield v2, that needs its own libraries:

That motor shield can be configured to run at 5V or 3.3V logic needed by Arduino Due:
