This is not a problem when using the RFXduino gateway, because it is running Linux. That's why RFXduino is cheaper, simpler to program and more powerful than the traditional WiFi/Ethernet shield approach.
For what I can see the Raspberry Pie version is running Linux, but this version cost a 40$ extra. We are far from the <20$ project.
