Hi, I am developing  a circuit based in the arduino uno schematic (only using de ATMEGA 328 with the bootloader), I wanna use the RX and TX ports to comunicate the ATMEGA 328 with the GSM shield, plus a GPS. I dont going to use the SIM900 chip, my dude is: Can I use the RX and TX ports of the ATMEGA 328 (and others ATMEGAS like arduino promini, arduino micro), without the 16u2 chip? Why is necessary the 16U2 chip in the arduino uno? Thanks!

The 16u2 chip is there to make programming easier. It allows you to upload with the bootloader instead of an ISP.  If you have already uploaded your code, use the RX and TX pins for whatever you want.

Wooo thank you! Now I have a clear idea of the importance of 16u2 chip in the arduino uno design :D
