I received this error yesterday when attempting to update 16U2 firmware on a DUE board following this procedure:
I had changed the command line I used to suit my file location, port etc. and received the same error.
Turns out I had the wrong baud rate setting entered, after using baud rate of 19200 upgrade was successful and no more error message.
