Here is the sketch: (it should work even though its a 'null' program.)

void setup() {
  // put your setup code here, to run once:

}

void loop() {
  // put your main code here, to run repeatedly:

}

Here are the error messages:

Any ideas?

Can you install v1.6.5 of the IDE and try to upload again?

OK, I installed ver. 1.6.5 and the previous errors went away and a new one cropped up!
Now it reported a problem with the loader (ld.exe).
Based on some previous searching of this site, I changed the compatibility property of the executable from its current setting of Windows 98/ME to Windows 2000 and that got rid of the problem.
I can now compile a null program!
I just hope it will also compile something useful!

I suppose as they improve the IDE, they can't necessarily keep from breaking it as well?
Thanks
Ray

That seems to be the case.  It's like they've never heard of the term "if it isn't broke, don't fix it."  They introduced a huge bug in v1.6.6 when they added the arduino builder.  But instead of admitting their error, or hell, even not admitting it and just pull the those versions from the downloads, they deny everything and people continue to download it.
