Forgot to mention, if you're interested (doesn't seem like many people are), I've also proposed a change to the underlying SerialComm class that allows a bit of help on input (i.e. readnumber() etc. instead of bashing your own each and every time).

I'm having a hard time with the new source files I created by pasting from your post. They seem to contain lots of '\240' and '\302' characters that BBEdit can't seem to see. Any suggestions?

Today i was testing a prototype using 328 and 8MHZ. I was pulling my hairs!!! I quickly realize that was a problem in the bootloader. Anyway i google "Arduino Bootloader 328 8mhz problem" and i've found this.

I tried the solutions and works great now!!

Fix worked for me as well. Thanks for remedying my frustration. I hope this fix makes it into the next version of the IDE.

Actually, I thougth, I was using a 16 MHz with 5 Volt. This is, what was said to me. I looked at the FTDI, it is marked with 3.3Volt. Does it determine 8 MHz? I can't read what's written on the crystal.
Something, what could perhaps help you. Everything runs perfect, if I compile with Arduino Duemilanove with 328.

I was having this same problem.  I copied over the code posted by bhagman and it worked perfectly. Thanks to you all for the great fix - especially EJ, who intercepted my thread about the same problem and sent me to this one.
