From within the Arduino environment itself, how do I know I am running the latest version?

You can check the version on the title bar of the window or the top left corner of the Help > About Arduino pop up.

The IDE is supposed to have a feature that will notify you if there is a new IDE version available by checking File > Preferences > Check for updates on startup but that wasn't working for a while and I'm not sure whether it is now so I don't know if I'd rely on it.

As for the version, older versions > 1.0 should be okay to use.

A few more bells and whistles in newer versions.

No technical PMs.

Thank you for your replies, but this was a gentle hint to add that feature, it does not currently exist.

I see it in two different places...Both pretty easy to spot / find.
Not sure if it needs any more hints LOL
It may not be the answer you were looking for but its the one I am giving based on either experience, educated guess, google or the fact that you gave nothing to go with in the first place so I used my wonky crystal ball.

It does not tell one if it's the latest :D
If you understand an example, use it.
If you don't understand an example, don't use it.

I do think the updatable IDE notification is useful. I dug up the issue for it not working:
They did finally update the web page that the IDE checks to see what the latest version is but that page is now redirected to https and the IDE was coded to only work with http. I'm not sure whether that was changed in the current IDE source or not but even so that doesn't solve the problem for older IDE versions and 1.8.2 won't show updatable notifications until 1.8.3 is released. It sounds like the best solution is to not redirect http://www.arduino.cc/latest.txt to https but that hasn't happened yet.
