A few months ago, I got an Arduino kit for my birthday, and it included an Arduino mega2560 and a mega2560 shield. The shield fits on the Arduino board, and has some soldering space, but why do I use it?

To make a custom shield.
Do you mean, take the soldering space and solder things on to make a custom shield?

Yes. Make sure any legs sticking down do not contact things on the Mega board.
