What would be the best sensor or series of sensors to detect if an object is present in a large field? Specifically, shooting an arrow (5mm diameter) into a large (10ftx10ft) target. I don't need to know the location of the aarow, just yes or no if it is anywhere on the face.

Do you have any control over the arrow and target? For example, put a stripe of reflective tape on the arrow? Then a simple IR emitter and detector can "see" that there's a bright object on the non-IR-reflective target.

Both of those would definitely work, painting the aarows a florescent color would enable the use of an IR system. A colleague recommended putting a frequency emmiting device inside/on top of/attached to the aarow and then using a frequency sensor behind the target? Thank you very much for the help!

A 'frequency emitting device' is so vague as to be meaningless, was the suggestion to emit a frequency of sound, light, radio or some other emission with a frequency ?

Hi,
An accelerometer on the back of the target to detect the shock of the bolt hitting the target.
That way you can detect each impact of many arrows.
Then a radio link back to the archer.
