I've just soldired my first led strip. I used my multimeter to check that I had signal through the soldired connection. I get signal on ground and 5v, but nothing on the data? Shouldn't the multineter read a signal from one connection to the other?

You will not see anything on a multi meter when you measure the data line. The signal is way too fast for it to have any effect on a DVM.

It will read continuity if you put it on the right setting but the data only goes from the computer to the first LED. After that it goes into the chip before being reconstituted and spat out the other side, so there is no continuity through the LEDs.
