Automated RFID Animal feed station

 Hi all: We raise livestock and since they live in groups but need different amounts of feed we would like to build an automatic feed dispenser. Basically would like to read some kind of RFID tag hanging around animals neck that has animals ID on it. With this information feed would be dispensed depending if that animal had already had its daily ration or not. Are their powerful enough RFID cards and readers available to read from 1 to 2 feet? Can Arduino communicate with them.

Yes, but they cost more than a cow. Google "Active RFID".  Most Arduino projects involve passive RFID chips/readers.

Sorry for my poor puncuation. Can you explain what would be the difference between active and passive RFID? Which one would be the appropriate one for this application?

Search for "uhf rfid" and "uhf rfid livestock". There are commercial systems and one Arduino shield UHD RFID reader.
