New to the forum, just purchased this kit and I cannot establish communications with the board.

1) Using Win10 OS
2) Have identified port 3 in device manager for the Arduino Mega 2560
Verified same pot and type board in tools menu of software
3) Driver appears to be updated and correct according to Windows
4) Received error
Arduino: 1.8.10 (Windows 10), Board: "Arduino Uno"

processing.app.SerialException: Error opening serial port.
Close the serial monitor (if open) or any program using port 'COM3'

Problem uploading to board.  See http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#upload for suggestions.

Should not be this difficult to get started. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You have the wrong board selected, thus the failed upload. You say you are using a Mega 2560, but you have the Arduino IDE set for the Uno.

You need to select Tools > Board > Arduino Mega or Mega 2560 in the Arduino IDE. Then try uploading again.

Indeed I did!!   :o    Thank you for being my second set of eyes. I quickly followed the instructions that quoted the "UNO" and never looked far enough to see a selection for the Mega 2560. Once selected, the communications were established and I was able to confirm operations by completing one of the code examples supplied. Again, many thanks as I sure as a beginner, there will be more. Happy Holidays!!

You're welcome. I'm glad to hear it's working now. Enjoy!
