Hello, and thank you for reading my question.

PREFACE: I am a complete noob

I've been trying for weeks to program my an atmega328pb-au. At first, I tried installing the Arduino bootloader onto it, and that was unsuccessful. Lately, I've been trying to program it directly with AVR dude, but still no luck. Nothing seems to be able to communicate with this thing.

Today, I noticed something interesting...if I connect the microcontroller to a 5V power supply via the VCC pin, then electricity also comes out of many of the other pins. Almost half of them seem to be connected to VCC. Is it possible that in the weeks that I've been tinkering with this microcontroller that I might have short-circuited it and melted the insides so that a bunch of the pins are now connected? Is this normal?
