Hi i just bought a new Mega 2560, and installed it on my mac running OS X Lion.
Then I followed the instructions and installed also the arduino software.
When I tried to run the Blink example that doesn't work and I am getting the error message instead:
avrdude: stk500_2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout

I already tried a few troubleshooting steps, like removing arduino from network preferences, and manually resetting the board, but without success.
Can anyone help please!!!!

thanks

I am having exactly the same problem.
My configuration is Mac OSX Lion, Mega 2560. When I connect the usb cable the power light is on and one LED is blinking. I then try to upload the Blink sketch and get the timeout error.
avrdude: stk500_2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout

I have confirmed the selected Board and the Serial Port are correct

(/dev/tty.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync)

Any help / pointers will be greatly appreciated..

push and hold the reset button
click the File / Upload
release the reset button

it worked for me as I had the exact same problem... in fact I created the account to post the same question but I just tried this solution :|

On Linux, I had a similar error with a PCB that I had made with Arduino bootloader. This error was because I shorted the USB connector pin 4 with the GND, which caused the connector to go in host mode instead of slave mode.
