Topic: Arduino IDE crashes on MacOS Catalina 10.15.5 (Read 2194 times) previous topic - next topic

Hello everyone,
I am having a problem with the Arduino IDE software version 1.8.12 (latest) on MacOS Catalina 10.15.5. Every time I click on the window right scroll bar the app crashes. Any ideas?

It works perfectly on another Mac of mine where I have Mojave installed, but I'd need to use it on my laptop with Catalina.

Thank you in advance for any help.

All the best,

Fab.

This is a known issue with the Arduino IDE and Catalina. The workaround is to use Arduino IDE 1.8.10. You can download it here:
https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/OldSoftwareReleases#1.5.x

Thank you Pert for your reply. I have tried that version and I still get the crash. Thoughts?

Thanks again :)

Funny thing, I have tried the new beta just released here:

https://www.arduino.cc/download.php?f=/arduino-nightly-macosx.zip

And the problem is still there! Why don't you fix it?

Instead, I tried the Pro alpha version:

https://blog.arduino.cc/2019/10/18/arduino-pro-ide-alpha-preview-with-advanced-features/

And it works just fine!

But I'd like to have the classic IDE application without the annoying bug on Catalina.

Thanks.

I haven't heard of anyone with the bug I'm thinking of who didn't find it to be fixed by using Arduino IDE 1.8.10. That crashing issue is caused by the switch to OpenJDK, which was done in Arudino IDE 1.8.11, so no chance of it happening in 1.8.10.

This makes me think that your bug is different from the one I assumed you had:
https://github.com/arduino/Arduino/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3AOpenJDK+label%3A%22OS%3A+OSX%22

And the problem is still there! Why don't you fix it?
If the developers don't know about a bug then they can't fix it. They are aware of the OpenJDK bug and will certainly get it fixed by the next release of the Arduino IDE, but your bug would likely require a different fix.

Please post the crash report.

I am seeing the crash any time I click a scroll bar. In a setting screen or in the text editor. I am on 10.15.5 Beta (19F83c)

Thus far I have tried, several previous versions of the IDE, down to 10.8.8. The problem still exists. As suggested, I tried the new IDE 0.0.6 but the boad library I need does not show up in the board manager as an option.

Adafruit Bluefruit nRF52832 Feather, where is the "Additional search paths" setting?

Thank you for your reply.

I am attaching the crash report for your perusal. Eager to hear from you about it.

Thanks!

I tried to create a copy of the IDE (with Teensy stuff) with a slightly newer OpenJDK version.

https://www.pjrc.com/teensy/td_152/Teensyduino_MacOS_Catalina_Java8u252.zip

Please give this a try and let me know if it helps?  I really want to find a solution for this bug (not requiring 1.8.10) but my Macbook Air with Catalina doesn't reproduce the problem, so I'm depending on your feedback.

Thank you, but unfortunately, it crashes again.

Hi @megapolow. fablau reported in another thread that this bug was fixed for them by an update to Catalina:
To everyone: about the problem on Catalina 10.15.5 Beta window scrolling issue mentioned earlier, it looks like the latest version of Catalina beta (19F94a) fixed the problem. At least for me.
If you have the time, please check if you get the same results and let us know what you find.

I installed the latest Arduino today and it crashes when going into the board manager.
My iMac is running Catalina 0.15.5 (19F101)
I put back to vdrsion 1.18.10 but to no avail.

See the attached report from the Arduino app.
The board manager shows in red: java.lang.NullPointerException
