i accidentally killed one of my arduino nanos recently and decided to give it a go reviving it, however being a cheapskate im trying to scavenge parts from other things. so far i have replaced the dead atmega328 chip with a working atmega8 chip, and have flashed a bootloader to it and have got lights to flash, however i would like to be able to use the inbuilt CH340 chip on the nano board to be able to program the atmega8 chip. Is this possible? would i need to create a custom bootloader? any help on what i should research next would be appreciated!!

Take a look at MiniCore: https://github.com/MCUdude/MiniCore
It comes with bootloaders for ATmega8 and others.
Always decouple electronic circuitry.
