Lead acid batteries have a much better life cycle than lithium ion.  A car made with them would last 3x as long but probably wouldn't go 1/3 as far...

How would I get the charging cable across the pavement [US = sidewalk] without it being a trip hazard and probably illegal (obstructing the highway)?

How long do you think it would take to swap batteries?
5 minutes would be a long time - and it would give you a much greater range.

Like you I don't really see a future for swapping batteries in private vehicles.
Partly this is for economic reasons but partly because I don't think people would trust getting a battery that might have been used for who knows what.
The car owner would not own the battery so why would s/he worry about that.

I'm not sure about other countries but gas cylinders here in Australia, are not owned by the consumer.
Depending on the gas some have a rental fee.
You can own an LPG cylinder for the BBQ but most now swap cylinders at service station or DIY store.

Also in the UK and Ireland.

No way. Passing iPhone users would get a free charge at my expense.
